Dune stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya on their "besties" friendship
By Daniel Roman
We're only a month and a half out from the release of Dune: Part Two, which means it's a time for trailers, teases, and behind-the-scenes sneak peeks to build hype. The sequel to director Denis Villeneuve's visionary 2021 Dune movie, Dune: Part Two will adapt the second half of Frank Herbert's iconic 1965 novel. The first movie showed how Paul Atriedes (Timothée Chalamet) avoided the coup that killed off his father and most of their household; the second will depict how Paul rises to become a leader of the Fremen people native to the planet Arrakis.
At the heart of this part of the story are Paul and his love interest Chani (Zendaya). Unlike Paul, Chani is Fremen and was raised on Arrakis. She'll be both a confidante and teacher to Paul as he learns the ways of her people in order to help them reclaim their homeworld from the colonialist Harkonnen forces.
That means we'll be seeing a fair amount of Chalamet and Zendaya on screen together in Dune: Part Two. But they don't stop enjoying each other's company when the cameras stop; the latest behind-the-scenes video posted to the official Dune Instagram account is all about the friendship the two actors have developed on set.
"Everyone knows me and Timothée are besties," said Zendaya in the video. "It's important to have someone you can laugh with."
Grinning at what is obviously a prank, Chalamet goes on to explain how Zendaya "keeps [him] humble" through "3 tactics: intimidation, aggression..." Zendaya then grabs the camera away before he can say the third as they both start laughing. Clearly, good times were had on the set of Dune: Part Two!
"She was a real partner in crime and someone I'm really grateful to have a very, very strong friendship with," Chalamet added.
It's always nice to hear that actors who have to have lots of on-screen chemistry actually get along behind the scenes. Both Chalamet and Zendaya have had plenty of high profile roles in recent years, but it's pretty likely we'll see them mix it up and do some new things in Dune: Part Two, which is an "epic war movie" that will have plenty of intense action scenes. No Willy Wonka singing to be had in this movie, only blood, spice and sandworms. Although who knows? I'm not saying I want to watch Paul Atriedes serenade Chani from atop a sand dune, but I'm not saying I wouldn't watch it either.
Dune: Part Two is out in theaters on March 1.
