Here comes a new dragonrider in images from the next episode of House of the Dragon
By Dan Selcke
There are only two episodes left in the second season of House of the Dragon! What's coming for Rhaenyra, Alicent, Daemon and the rest of our cast this Sunday? HBO just released a bevy of new images. Let's take a look.
We have to start with this image of Queen Rhaenyra on the beach at Driftmark with her dragon Syrax, staring down newly minted dragonrider Addam of Hull, who's somehow managed to mount Seasmoke, the dragon last ridden by Rhaenyra's late husband Laenor Velaryon:
At the end of the previous episode, "Smallfolk," Rhaenyra rushed off to find out who had mounted Seasmoke. We already guessed it was Addam, a peasant from Driftmark, and the trailer confirms it.
Rhaenyra is not terribly pleased about this development, which is intriguing. She wanted to find more dragonriders, and now one fell into her lap. Well, the fact that Addam is common-born seems to be a sticking point. "House Targaryen is the blood of the dragon. If any may lay claim to it, what are we then?" Rhaenyra's son Jace asks in the trailer. They're gonna have to get over it, because Rhaenyra needs that dragon air force if she hopes to take the Iron Throne from her half-brother Aegon.
Addam actually does have noble blood, since he and his brother Alyn are the illegitimate children of Corlys Velaryon. That storyline has been stewing all season, and it looks like the characters are finally going to talk about it in the new episode. Here's Corlys and Alyn (recently promoted to being Corlys' first mate, hence the fancy new clothes), having what I hope is a long-overdue conversation:
Elsewhere on Team Rhaenyra, we'll see more of Baela Targaryen after she sat out last week's episode:
And we have one shot of Rhaenyra with her spymaster Mysaria. These two shared a kiss in the last episode. Where do they stand now? Stay tuned:
Team Green
Meanwhile, Aemond Targaryen still rules in King's Landing while his brother Aegon convalesces. He looks confident as ever:
Meanwhile, we know that Aemond's own spymaster Larys Strong is conspiring with the bedridden King Aegon behind Aemond's back. There's a power struggle between the brothers on right now. Aemond is not eager to give up the regency, and I wouldn't put it past him to try and kill his own brother. But with Larys Strong on his side, Aegon might just have a chance:
Meanwhile, Alicent Hightower — mother to both Aegon and Aemond — has...gone on vacation? She's in a forest in this shot, and I am not prepared to guess how she got there:
I know that Alicent has been kicked off the Small Council, but it seems like a very bad time to go wandering around Westeros. Put a pin in this one.
Daemon at Harrnehal
Finally, we have a bunch of shots of Daemon Targaryen at Harrenhal, where he's been unsuccessfully trying to rally Riverlords to his side for four episodes now. I'm not gonna lie: I've grown pretty tired of watching him mope around the place having nightmares. Hopefully things start to happen for him right after he walks out of frame:
And it looks like my prayers will be answered, because we get a couple of shots of Daemon Targaryen talking with young Oscar Tully, who's now the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands after Oscar's grandfather Grover Tully (yes, their names are references to the Muppets) died last week.
If Daemon can convince Lord Oscar to rally the Riverlords, he may finally get that army he's wanted.
The new, as-yet-untitled episode of House of the Dragon airs this Sunday, July 28 at 8:00 p.m. CST on HBO and Max.
