House of the Dragon dominates streaming ratings for its season 2 finale
By Dan Selcke
House of the Dragon aired its season 2 finale back on August 4, and despite some misgivings among fans, it was a ratings hit. That's according to The Wrap Report, which measures streaming and linear TV viewing according to "viewership trends collected from Samba TV's panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Censes." These ratings might not be quite as unimpeachable as Nielsen ratings, but they still give us a good idea of what people are watching. Check out the top 10 streaming programs from the week of August 5-11:
- House of the Dragon (Max)
- Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Netflix)
- A Good Girl's Guide to Murder season 1 (Netflix)
- Jack Reacher (Netflix)
- Kingdomof the Planet of the Apes (Hulu)
- The Umbrella Academy season 4 (Netflix)
- Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie (Netflix)
- Descendants: The Rise of Red (Disney+)
- Despicable Me 4 (VOD)
- The Instigators (Apple TV+)
As usual, Netflix dominates the chart, but House of the Dragon helps Max claim the top spot. I bet the executives at Warner Bros. Discovery are kicking themselves for (allegedly) moving a couple of big events originally intended for the end of the second season to the beginning of the third; otherwise they could still be on this roll.
It'll be awhile before we see new episodes of House of the Dragon, but HBO will take us back to Westeros in 2025 with a new Game of Thrones prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. We'll see if that can light up the charts.
The other interesting thing to note from this chart is that people really want to watch the old Jack Reacher movies starring Tom Cruise now that they're on Netflix. It may have something to do with the new Jack Reacher TV series becoming a smash hit on Prime Video.
Alien: Romulus tops the box office
Pivoting to movies, check out the top grossers from this past weekend at the box office. The numbers are total revenue earned thus far:
- Alien: Romulus: $108 million
- Deadpool & Wolverine: $1.14 billion
- It Ends With Us: $180 million
- Twisters: $333 million
- Coraline: $138 million
- Despicable Me 4: $847 million
- Trap: $62 million
- Inside Out 2: 1.62 billion
- Borderlands: $21 million
- Stree 2: $2 million
With the release of Alien: Romulus and the continued success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney claims both the #1 and #2 spots on the chart, which is giving 2019 vibes. Inside Out 2 is still raking it in for them, as well. A rerelease of the 2009 animated film Coraline did quite well, M. Night Shyamalan new movie Trap has already made back over double its budget, and the video game adaptation Borderlands is a big wet flop.
