This past week, HBO wrapped up on reshoots for the second season of House of the Dragon, its Game of Thrones prequel series. We know that season 2 will premiere this summer, probably in June. It's time for HBO to start getting people excited for the returns of Rhaenyra, Daemon and Aegon Targaryen and their war for the Iron Throne. And it sounds like they could be starting the party very soon.
A few accounts on Twitter are saying that we're going to get advance looks at several upcoming HBO series — including House of the Dragon, The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy — next Thursday or Friday, March 21 or 22. These accounts aren't official, but the reports aren't coming out of nowhere. Next Thursday, Warner Bros. Discovery executive JB Perrette is scheduled to give a presentation at the Series Mania TV festival in the city of Lille, France. This is a festival where TV professionals come together to watch screenings, network, and even show off what they have coming down the pipeline. According to the festival's program, Perrette is scheduled to give his talk at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21.
Now, just because Warner Bros. Discovery has a presence at Series Mania doesn't necessarily mean they're going to show new footage from their upcoming series. That said, some things are lining up. Like we said, House of the Dragon is due out in June, so it seems like about the right time to start getting people hyped with new trailers, and an industry event like Series Mania could be a good place to do it.
Also, it looks like Warner Bros. Discovery has a fairly substantial presence at this year's Series Mania. On Wednesday, there's a Max Original Showcase as well as a talk from Francesca Orsi, the head of drama at HBO. Again, this isn't solid proof that we're getting a trailer, but it's worth paying attention to.
The Penguin and Dune: Prophecy are coming
Beyond House of the Dragon, The Penguin is a spinoff of the movie The Batman starring Robert Pattison. This spinoff show would focus on the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell, becoming the biggest crime lord in Gothham City. And Dune: Prophecy is a Dune prequel series that would focus on the founding of the Bene Gesserit order. Given how successful Dune: Part Two has been in theaters, the timing feels right for a show like that.
Both of those series are due out sometime this year, although we don't have exact release dates yet. Will we get them at Series Mania? Stay tuned.
