Invincible gets disappointing release date update; don't expect new episodes this month

Amazon has revealed what's coming to Prime Video in January, and new episodes of Invincible are nowhere to be seen.

Invincible, based on Robert Kirkman's superhero comic of the same name, blasted into our lives in 2021, with a first season on Amazon Prime Video so blisteringly violent and heartfelt we still get whiplash thinking about it. Then came the Long Silence as fans waited for season 2. It finally arrived last November, but after four episodes, the quiet resumed.

Prime Video has aired the first half of season 2. An official Amazon account has said that the back half is coming in "early 2024," but we still don't have an exact date. When fans were panicking over this uncertain future back when the most recent episode dropped, @DynamoSuperX on Twitter reassured people that the show was coming back on January 4, complete with a screenshot to back up the claim. That tweet got 23 thousand likes, so clearly, fans wanted to believe.

Well, it's January 4, I just checked my Prime Video account, and there's no new episode of Invincible available to watch. What's more, Amazon put out a press release highlighting all the new stuff coming to the service in January, and Invincible is nowhere to be seen.

At minimum, we can probably count out the possibility of watching new episodes of Invincible in January. As for when they'll finally come along, we remain in limbo.

Not only do we not know when Invincible is coming back, but we also don't know why the season is being split up like this in the first place. The closest thing to an explanation we have came from co-showrunner Simon Racioppa back in December. “It was discussed by all parties,” Racioppa said. “When we started season 2, it wasn’t the original plan but, unfortunately, many different circumstances came up during production that made us realize this was the best way to do this."

"We want to give the fans some episodes now and then ask them to wait just a little longer for the others. So no, it wasn’t a story-based decision but, as I’m sure you know, there are a multitude of things that can happen during production that can affect your release date. We just felt this was the best way to present season 2 and get it out to the fans."

Whatever the exact reason for the delay, it's dragging on longer than I think anyone wants, and made worse by the lack of a solid release date. It makes you think that maybe there's more chaos behind the scenes than we're being told.

Whatever is happening with Invincible, I hope it gets its act together soon, both because I want to watch new episodes, and because maintaining momentum is important to piquing and keeping people's interest. The sooner they're back on track, the sooner fans can stop wondering what's going on with the show and start enjoying it.

Steven Yuen explains why he had to leave Marvel's Thunderbolts movie

We know that the actors have already recorded their lines for Invincible season 2; in fact, it sounds like some of them are already done with season 3. So it's not like lead actor Steven Yeun is holding up the process.

Speaking of Yuen, he recently made headlines after it came out that he was leaving the Marvel movie Thunderbolts. Talking to Variety, he explained that he left because of scheduling conflicts created by production shutdowns caused by the actors and writers strikes in 2023. "I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it," Yeun said. “But Jake [Schreier] I know is going to do an incredible job."

And Yuen is still down to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the future. "I wanna do a Marvel movie," he said. As long as I get more Invincible, he can do whatever he likes.
