The second season of Invincible, adapted from Robert Kirkman's hyper-violent, hyper-earnest, very entertaining superhero comic, wrapped up earlier this year. Fans might worry that they have to wait years before another new season, but work on seasons 2 and 3 happened side by side, so we expect new episodes sometime next year, hopefully on the early side.
More good news: at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, Kirkman revealed that the show had already been renewed for season 4! “I think you can see that Season 2 is an advancement of a lot of things that were introduced in Season 1. The stakes were higher, things got a little crazier, and there were a lot of pieces moving that were hinting at a lot of bigger stories," he said, per Variety. "Those bigger stories really start crashing down in Season 3. But Season 4 dwarfs Season 3 in a lot of really crazy ways. It’s an escalating show where each season is going to be bigger, crazier, more intense, and that stuff really kicks off with Season 3.”
"I feel like we’re just getting started. I’m very hopeful that this show can be around for awhile. With Season 4, we’re really hitting our stride. There’s really exciting stuff coming up in Season 4."
Kirkman, also the author of The Walking Dead comics, has ever been a good hype man; he's getting us excited for season 4 even before the debut of season 3. If the show follows the comics, the new couple of seasons will feature hero Mark Grayson getting mixed up in a war against the Viltrumites, a brutal extraterrestrial race that goes around conquering planets. Mark, of course, is part Viltrumite himself. It's all very "what if Superman but twisted?"
This next era is "the darkest and the most intense" of the story, and Mark needs a new costume to match it. Soon enough, he'll debut his blue-and-black outfit from the comics, a fan favorite:
There have "been chats" about Invincible crossing over with The Boys
Amazon Prime Video has become the unofficial home of violent, funny, subversive superhero dramas. In addition to Invincible, it's also got The Boys, which just wrapped up its exciting fourth season.
Might there be a crossover in the future? Kirkman says “there have been some chats" about it, but nothing solid.
"It does seem like a fun thing. You got to see Homelander and Omni-Man fighting in ‘Mortal Kombat 1.’ That was cool. I think that’s something people would be interested in. Maybe someday we do something exciting, but there’s no plans as of yet."
If would definitely be fun if this happened. And if we never get an official version, fans have already done it anyway (beware sickening animated violence below):
Like I said, new episodes of Invincible will very likely be out in 2025. I'm afraid we'll have to wait longer for the fifth and final season of The Boys, although there is a new season of spinoff Gen V coming next year to tide fans over.
