Let's dreamcast the movie adaptation of Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold

With a movie adaptation of Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold in the works, we've decided to try our hand at dream-casting the First Law series' big-screen debut.

Supporting Characters

Best Served Cold features no shortage of significant auxiliary characters, and this article would likely top 10,000 words if I dream-cast people for all of them. I’ll instead offer suggestions for a few of the more prominent supporting players.

Carlot dan Eider — Morena Baccarin: A former merchant renowned around the Circle of the World for her beauty, resourcefulness, and ability to stay alive, Carlot dan Eider is persistently involved in the events of Best Served Cold. I’ll reunite the prospective Best Served Cold director with a past collaborator here, as Morena Baccarin, who starred as Vanessa in Miller’s Deadpool and Inara in the TV show Firefly, matches Carlot as she’s described throughout the First Law series.

Shenkt — Michael Kelly: Despite his barbaric abilities and prowess at his profession, Shenkt himself is described as a rather banal man, a gaunt individual of average height and appearance. Michael Kelly, given his look and the quiet menace he displayed in House of Cards as Doug Stamper, seems like a strong choice for the character.

Grand Duke Rogont — Édouard Philipponnat: Grand Duke Rogont of Ospiria is a wealthy leader of grand ambitions and questionable morals, an attractive individual whose loyalties often sway whichever way the wind is blowing and lie with whoever can help him at the current moment. Édouard Philipponnat effectively played a similar character in 2023’s Napoleon; his performance as Tsar Alexander I sticks out as strong. At just 25 years of age, Philipponnat may be a bit young to portray Rogont as he’s described in the novel, though the Grand Duke’s youthful appearance is often noted.

Ishri — Vivian Oparah: I was initially going to cast Lupita Nyong’o as Ishri, but the actress may be too big a star to play what ultimately amounts to a rather minor role. I instead proceeded with Vivian Oparah, a relatively new actress who recently received a BAFTA nomination for her stellar performance in 2023’s Rye Lane. Though Oparah’s character in the coming-of-age love story shares little in common with Ishri, I simply believe she deserves a shot in a (relatively) big-budget film.
