There hasn't been a Star Wars movie released in theaters in a few years, but Disney is determined to change that. It's got several films in the works, including one that will follow Rey (Daisy Ridley), last seen walking off into the sunset at the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, the movie will be set roughly 15 years after the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Is Rey trying to rebuild the Jedi order? Did she return to her life as a scavenger? Maybe she dog-sits now? Anything is possible.
Speaking to CNN on New Year's Eve, director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy teased the movie in the vaguest of terms. “I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special," she said. Obaid-Chinoy also noted that she'll be the first woman to direct a Star Wars movie released in theaters. “We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”
It should be noted that Obaid-Chinoy will be the first woman to direct a Star Wars movie if the Rey film actually makes it to theaters. Disney has had a lot of Star Wars projects bubble up only to evaporate in the last few years, including a proposed trilogy from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, a proposed trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, and a Rogue Squadron movie from Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins. Until Disney actually drops a trailer for Rey's Big Funky Adventure, I have to assume that all of this could go away.
If the Rey movie ends up happening, it doesn't sound like Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) will be involved. "They're doing stuff, but not with me. I'm not doing any more," he said recently. If you recall, Kylo Ren died at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. True, death has never stopped Lucasfilm from bringing back characters, but we'll take Driver's word that he's finished with the franchise...until Disney drives a dump truck full of money up his driveway, anyway. It's 2024 and anything can happen, folks.
