From A Feast for Crows: The Drowned Man (Chapter 19)

One of the few chapters in the series told from the perspective of Asha and Theon’s uncle Aeron Greyjoy, this one is unforgettable, and contains a lot more nuance than the corresponding scene from Game of Thrones.

After the previous chapter sets the stage and introduces the main players, this chapter takes us to the Kingsmoot, where the Ironborn will elect a new leader after the mysterious death of Balon Greyjoy. Weirdly one of the most democratic societies in Westeros, the Ironborn choose their kings by public acclamation of the assembled captains of the Ironborn fleets. Bribery and manhandling the voters is fully encouraged, as claimants are expected to have notable heroes to stand with them as their champions while their crews spill out chests of treasure to buy votes from a raucous audience.

After some second-rate candidates step forward and deliver their pitches, the Greyjoys come up to steal the show. First, Victarion Greyjoy stands forward with a simple speech about strength and victory and nearly wins the day. He plans to return to the North and finish the conquests that his brother Balon started. He is interrupted by his clever niece Asha, who comes forward and lays out a really good plan for her rule: make peace, give everyone some land, and together the ironborn will take on the world.

The assembled lords and captains seem split between uncle and niece until the sound of a horn shocks them all to silence. Victarion’s handsome and famous (but straight up evil) brother Euron Crow’s Eye comes forward as one of his men blows on the horn of a dragon. Euron's plan: conquer everything, everywhere and marry Danaerys Targaryen for her dragons. His men then dump out plunder from across the seas of the world and the crowd goes nuts! His plan might not be the most practical, but it certainly is the most intoxicating, and it wins him the day.
