Which of these 11 epic fantasy/sci-fi shows will emerge triumphant in 2024?
By Dan Selcke
11. Severance season 2 (2024, Apple TV+)
The last show we're going to talk about is Severance, a sci-fi drama on Apple TV+ about an office where employees have no memory of what they did at work when they're at home, and vice versa. The first season was a twisty thrill stacked back to front with excellent actors. Because the show is on Apple TV+, it had a bit more trouble than it might elsewhere finding an audience, since the subscriber base is relatively small, but the series is absolutely good enough to become a world-wide obsession.
Hopefully that dream can become a reality in 2024. However, there have been whispers of issues behind the scenes of Severance. Paired with delays brought on by the Hollywood strikes in 2023, and I'm not 100% sure we'll actually see new episodes this year. I'll cross my fingers for this one.
What will be the best sci-fi/fantasy show of 2024?
As I said earlier, I think this game is House of the Dragon's to lose. It's been a while since season 1, but that show has proven it can deliver and it has a great pedigree. If it stays the course, it should walk away with this.
The Rings of Power doesn't seem as much a threat to House of the Dragon's dominance as it once did, but it shouldn't be counted out, not when it's working with Jeff Bezos' bottomless war chest. And sometimes shows take a season or two to find their footing.
Of the other shows on this list, I'm most hopeful for newcomers like Avatar: The Last Airbender and 3 Body Problem. Both of these shows have excellent source material, built-in fanbases, and promising first looks. But I have a feeling House of the Dragon will still be sitting on the throne by the time 2024 comes to an end. We'll reconvene here in 12 months to see if I was right.
