If you’ve been looking forward to watching Project Hail Mary on Prime Video in the coming weeks, we’ve got some bad news for you. Amazon MGM Studios’ breakout hit won’t be streaming anytime soon.
While the Ryan Gosling-led film was expected to arrive on Prime Video in the upcoming weeks, Amazon MGM Studios has decided to break its own standard theatrical release window by giving the film an extended theatrical run. Typically, Amazon MGM Studios films have remained in theaters for approximately 45 days, give or take, and that was intended to be the plan for Project Hail Mary as well. However, given the film’s ongoing success, MGM has decided to extend the exclusive theatrical window for the film, which has delayed its streaming release window.
“We announced yesterday that MGM is extending the exclusive theatrical window for Project Hail Mary so it won’t be on streaming anytime soon,” director Christopher Miller revealed on X. “This is a movie that needs to be seen on a big screen—and with a full return to IMAX screens for 1 week only starting this weekend, make plans to see it in a theater now! Bring friends and loved ones. It’s an experience to share with others.”
It’s not at all surprising that Amazon MGM Studios is looking to capitalize on the ongoing success of Project Hail Mary by extending its exclusive theatrical run. Since its March 20 release, Project Hail Mary has been captivating audiences and grossed over $523 million worldwide for the studio. Given its ongoing success, it makes sense that Amazon MGM Studios would look to keep the film in theaters for a longer than usual run, and the return to IMAX screens for one week only is certainly exciting for fans.
The film is a spectacularly stunning film, one that deserves to be enjoyed on the big screen and in IMAX. We have no doubt the film’s return to IMAX will be quite enticing for fans of the film, including those who might not have been able to see it in IMAX during its original window of release.
Still, it is interesting to see Amazon MGM Studios extend the film’s theatrical release, as the studio has typically held true to its 45-day theatrical window. And this does unfortunately mean that fans who are waiting to stream the film at home and those who have been looking forward to rewatching Project Hail Mary from home are going to have to wait it out for the film to hit Prime Video.
Originally, under Amazon MGM Studios' 45-day theatrical window, we'd have seen Project Hail Mary arrive on Prime Video sometime between April 29 and May 6. However, with the film remaining in theaters, it's unclear when exactly we'll see Project Hail Mary hitting Prime Video. In fact, there's really no telling when the movie will finally be available to stream, as it is unclear how long Amazon MGM Studios will be keeping the film in theaters as part of its extension.
Fans hoping to enjoy the film in the meantime will have to head out to theaters, which is honestly the best place to experience the breathtaking cinematography and scope of Project Hail Mary.
