Game of Thrones turns 15 in April

Yes, that’s right: Game of Thrones turns 15 on April 17, marking the date in 2011 that the premiere episode was released. If you hadn’t read the A Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin, you were likely stunned by all the big moments from season 1, from Jaime Lannister shoving Bran Stark out a window to Ned Stark being executed. The series became known for killing off central characters in shocking twists you wouldn’t see coming.

And even as the TV show went past the source material, Game of Thrones still delivered on powerful moments that could change everything in the matter of minutes. Whether you agreed with the plot points in the later seasons or not, the series lived up to its first season in unpredictable turns and bold character choices.

As a huge Game of Thrones fan, I’ll admit it sometimes gets tough to remember what season some of these major moments happened in. With eight seasons and 73 episodes, the timeline can get a little blurry when you haven’t done a proper rewatch in years. And yes, as I’m writing this, I’m realizing that I’m due for one. No matter how many times you’ve seen the show, it truly never gets old.

And as more and more time passes, Game of Thrones proves its legacy and permanent place as a fixture in pop culture. Especially for the genre, it is the blueprint for fantasy.
