Conscription Day 2026 is finally here, and with it, Rebecca Yarros just announced the biggest Fourth Wing update in quite some time on Wednesday, July 15.

Yarros finally confirmed the premise and title of the new Empyrean book, also known as Not Book 4 among Fourth Wing fans, on Instagram. The new book is called Threshing Day, featuring 13 stories about some of the biggest and most impactful characters in the Empyrean universe on Threshing Day—and yes, that includes dragons, too. The bestselling author also reveals the deluxe edition illustrations were done by Joe Requeza, who has worked on fantasy titles such as The Light of Mezzara by Tim McKay and The Lord of the East by Derek Beebe.

Threshing Day will be released on Sept. 29, 2026. You can pre-order the book from a number of retailers, including Amazon and Target. Check out Yarros’ epic announcement below, including gripping quotes from the upcoming books:

In addition to this exciting announcement, Yarros has teased that Xaden’s story from Threshing Day will become available on her website at a later date.

Threshing Day is not Fourth Wing Book 4

For those who don't recall, Conscription Day is the day in Fourth Wing when the cadets cross the parapet and officially join the Riders Quadrant, as Violet Sorrengail does early in the first book of the series. The big reveal on Conscription Day puts to bed months of speculation about what Yarros had planned for this story. Fans truly had no idea what to expect, but there were a lot of clues along the way that this is what Yarros had in mind for the next part of Violet's story.

It should also be noted that Threshing Day is not Book 4 of The Empyrean series. Yes, it's the fourth book that will be published, and it's part of the series, but it's not the fourth book that will continue Violet and Xaden's journey after the wild finish of Onyx Storm, the third book in the series.

Some fans of The Empyrean series might not be familiar with novellas like this in the middle of a series, but they're quite common in fantasy series. Inevitably, there's going to be a lot of confusion about this book, even though Yarros has been very clear that this is not the fourth book of The Empyrean series.

I have no doubt this big reveal will be welcomed by all Fourth Wing fans. Yarros has been teasing something big coming on Wednesday, July 15, since at least July 3, but it's possible her teases date back even further than that.

Since July 3, though, fans have been running wild with all kinds of theories about what was coming on Conscription Day. I heard so many theories about what could be on the way, including Book 4 announcements, like release date information, the title, cover, and more., Then, there were all sorts of rumors about the upcoming Fourth Wing TV series on Prime Video. Many fans thought we were getting casting announcements, but it sounds like it's just too early in the process for that yet.

I'm sure we'll learn all that information in time. Both Book 4 and the TV series won't be released until 2027 at the earliest, and it could be even longer depending on how everything goes.

For now, let's just celebrate the good news that Threshing Day will be released on Sept. 29. Hopefully, that will hold fans over until the next big chapter in Violet's story. Luckily, there are plenty of good fantasy book series to read until then.

Stay tuned for more news about Yarros' Empyrean series and the upcoming Prime Video TV series.
