Rebecca Yarros has a new book, Threshing Day, coming to bookstores, retailers, and libraries near you later this month, and the author of The Empyrean series has a request for Fourth Wing fans.
In a Facebook post that she reshared on her Instagram Story, Yarros issued a plea for Fourth Wing fans who happen to be retail workers not to spoil Threshing Day, the new Empyrean novella set to be released on Sept. 29, 2026.
Here's Yarros' full request from her now-deleted Facebook post:
"Ok, let's be honest. I wanted to drop Threshing Day as a complete surprise. No preorder. No announcement. No cover reveal. Just joy. The publishing industry told me we couldn't do that because someone would inevitably leak it. That was what happened with Onyx Storm and that book had been widely announced. Spoilers hit the internet, and it was heartbreaking.
"So please. From the bottom of my heart. If you work for a retailer and come across Threshing Day before release day, please don't be the person who proves the industry right and leaks it for clicks and engagement. Please don't be the thief of joy for everyone who has waited for it. Please."
It's such a bummer that Yarros even has to plead for employees to just simply do their job and not try to be an internet hero for a day.
I don't think there's anything wrong with fans, who buy the book or check it out from the library, talking about spoilers online as soon as they finish the book. The internet is good, and bad, at bringing people together, so we should be able to talk about Threshing Day, read all the good moments, talk about the other moments, and share our theories about what it means for Book 4, which Yarros is currently writing.
Unfortunately, as Yarros mentioned, Onyx Storm spoilers leaked online before the release of the third Empyrean book in January 2025. Hopefully, we don't have to deal with that for Threshing Day.
It's always a good idea to practice vigilance when avoiding spoilers. We know that books are probably being shipped right now. We hope retailers will keep them stashed away until it's time to put them out on shelves or start shipping them, but that's quite unrealistic in this day and age. There are smartphones everywhere, so it's definitely a good idea to not dive too deep into the Threshing Day lore from unofficial outlets. I promise our team at Winter is Coming won't be sharing any spoilers or leaks for Threshing Day, and we'll be covering the book before and after release on Sept. 29.
For those who don't know, Threshing Day is the day that the dragon riders of the Basgiath War College bond with their dragons or die. The novella is a collection of the Threshing Day stories of 13 characters from Yarros' Empyrean series. We don't know what characters will be included, but that will be the first thing that fans want to know right out of the gate.
There are many theories about which characters will be included. It's also expected that we'll meet many more dragons and characters from the past and also learn some more secrets. It could have major ramifications for the future of the series.
