Rebecca Yarros sums up Fourth Wing Book 4 in just two words

Book 4 sounds like it has the potential to be the best book of The Empyrean series so far.

Angsty and chaotic, that's what fans of Rebecca Yarros' Empyrean series can expect in Book 4!

Yarros just dropped a major hint about the vibes of the fourth book of The Empyrean series during Iron Flame Night with the Colorado Avalanche, the NHL team from Denver, on Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Avalance hosted a Q&A with Yarros to celebrate the second book of the series, Iron Flame, which was released on Oct. 30, 2023, almost three years ago exactly.

During the Q&A, Yarros shared some big hints about what's to come in Book 4, but one question and answer that stood out to me, which I saw circulated on social media, was about how Yarros would describe the book in one word. Yarros picked two words instead.

"I would say angsty and chaotic," Yarros said. "Yeah, I think angsty and chaotic is where it's at. Remember, I'm still writing it. So, that could change while I'm writing it. That could change in edits, because my editors probably cringing thinking about that chaotic word."

Book 4 definitely felt like it was going to be chaotic

Now, this is such an interesting answer. After Onyx Storm and that ending, there's really nothing else that I would expect from Yarros with this answer. For one, it's quite obvious this is where we were heading. Absolutely no qualms with Voilet Sorrengail, but she isn't the most precise when it comes to controlling her emotions. She's going to be angry with how everything played out, I think, and that's probably going to lead her into making some poor, or more chaotic, decisions.

The Empyrean series has always been chaotic, in my opinion. Yes, there's lots of structure and all of that, but Violet and Xaden Riorson have basically been playing by their own rules since the start of the series, which has led to some awesome conflict. Now, the floodgates are open after what happened at the end of Onyx Storm, and I feel like that's only going to spin this story into a more unhinged direction.

On top of that, Violet does seem to be quite full of angst. She has a chip on her shoulder and has had it in this series basically since we met her. She hasn't been right about everything, but she's been influential in the face of major danger. She should remind everyone in power about just what she's done and what she's capable of doing, so if she's bringing even more angst in the new book, I think fans are going to appreciate that.

While we do have some great updates, we're still missing some big parts of this puzzle. As Yarros was clear about in her answers, she is still writing the book. It's not done yet, and it doesn't sound like she's all that close to finishing the story yet, based on her mentioning the editing process.

Unfortunately, that means we're probably in for quite the wait for Fourth Wing Book 4, but we'll continue to share updates about the book and the Fourth Wing TV series as we find out.
