HBO might not be ready to commit to the endgame plan for House of the Dragon, but co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal certainly does not share those hesitations in committing to the plans for ending the show.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming third season of the show, Condal reaffirmed his plans to end the show with its already confirmed fourth season.
"I can't speak for everybody else involved with the show and HBO and all that, but, yes, that is very much my plan," Condal confirmed about the plan to end the series with season 4.
The proclamation from Condal is far from surprising, as he’s been very vocal about plans to bring the series to a close after a fourth season.
During an appearance on the Escape Hatch podcast in late December 2025, Condall revealed that he had begun working on the fourth season, which he referred to as the “last one.”
"It's good. It's definitely, like, turned a big page here," Condal remarked when asked about the status of season 3. "And now, also knowing there's only, you know, one more left to go and feeling like we can leave it all out on the field, you know, because we've started the writing process for season 4, which will be the last one. So, yeah, it's all trending up in a good way.”
That was the first true moment in which Condal had referred to season 4 as the final season, and it made it clear that he had crafted a vision to tell a four-season story for the show and was looking to stick to that plan despite the popularity of the series. Ending the show with season 4 certainly makes sense as we're quickly nearing the end of its source materials.
Of course, it would not be a first for the Game of Thrones franchise to see a show try to push forward beyond the timeline of its source materials; however, it makes no sense for HBO to try to drag out the story House of the Dragon has set out to tell. Unlike Game of Thrones whose ending had not been finished by author George R.R. Martin and had no choice but to go off script to finish the series, House of the Dragon is based on a completed piece.
Fire & Blood covers 150 years of Targaryen history, concluding with the Dance of the Dragons, which is the story that has been carved out and told via House of the Dragon. We're quickly approaching the end of the story in the books from a timeline perspective, so it makes sense that House of the Dragon season 4 will be its last.
With Condal making it clear that season 4 will be the last, the only official confirmation we're waiting for is from HBO. It's possible that HBO might wait to make an official announcement until a bigger event, such as San Diego Comic-Con. Or perhaps they want to wait until after season 3 ends to finally confirm that season 4 will be the show's final season. Either way, it's clear that Condal has mapped out season 4 to be the last chapter in the show's run, and fans should not be surprised when HBO officially announces season 4 as the final season, whenever that might be.
