Earlier this year, HBO Chief Casey Bloys seemed to hint the door was open for House of the Dragon to end its run with a supersized season. No exact episode count or promise was made, but it was heavily implied that HBO was open to a bigger closing chapter for the hit show.
Of course, supersized can mean a number of things, but in the context of an HBO original, it gave fans hope that perhaps the final season of House of the Dragon would be as long as the show’s first. Before its episode count was reduced to eight episodes a season starting in season 2, House of the Dragon was gifted a 10-episode first season, which gave the show more room to flesh out its characters. This longer episode count came in particularly handy for the show, which underwent a significant time jump halfway through the season, something that would have been trickier with only eight episodes.
Knowing that House of the Dragon season 4 would be the final season for the show, it made sense for HBO to be open to a supersized season. After all, there is still a lot of ground to cover in the source material from Fire & Blood. Sadly, while HBO might have been open to a longer season, showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed the show will not be ending its run with an expanded season.
House of the Dragon season 4 episode count finally confirmed
Following the release of the House of the Dragon’s season 3 finale, Ryan Condal has been keeping busy with a lot of interviews. Most of these have been reflective of the finale’s biggest moments, while a few have started to look ahead to the final season, mostly from a plot standpoint. However, a few have given fans key updates about the production side of things, including confirmation that season 4 is running on schedule and will begin filming in early 2027.
Not only do we now know that the final season is running on schedule, but thanks to a new interview with Business Insider, we now know that the final season will consist of eight episodes. That’s right, we’re not getting a supersized season, but the plus side is that we’re also not getting an abbreviated season that falls below what has become the standard episode order for House of the Dragon.
Condal confirmed the show will come to a close with eight episodes when discussing the challenge of landing the plane and saying goodbye.
“There is a struggle to say goodbye. And I think that's where a lot of the debate, or whatever it is, comes into the picture, because I think a lot of people just simply don't want it to end, and they all have their ideas of how it should, or what a satisfying ending is,” Condal admitted. “So I think for us, it's really, how do we take these eight hours that we have left—eight chapters that we have left—and tell a compelling, satisfying story that ties up as many of the threads as we're able to, but also leaves with sort of wistful open-endedness at the end of it to make you yearn for more, in a good way? That's the thing we're aiming for.”
This is the first time Condal has directly confirmed that the final season will not be getting the extended run fans had been hoping for since Casey Bloys hinted a supersized season was on the table. It’s certainly disappointing not to get a larger final season, but season 3 proved that the eight-episode format can certainly work well for the show and gives the writers plenty of time to map out a strong season.
It might even be for the better that season 4 will not be supersized, as this should result in a much tighter final season in which every episode packs a powerful punch. Hopefully, the final season also brings us a satisfying ending, which is something this franchise has struggled with in the past.
Hopefully, history will not repeat itself, and House of the Dragon will give fans a better final season than Game of Thrones. We'll have to wait until 2028 to find out.
