It's time to head back underground, because Apple TV has just unveiled its first teaser for Silo season 3! This eerie minute-long clip features glimpses of all our main cast, as well as a few newcomers who we met briefly during the ending stinger for season 2. It's enough to start building some hype, and help viewers set their expectations for the mind-bending journey ahead.

The teaser gives us two exciting confirmations. The first is the show's premiere date of July 3, 2026. The second is that this season will bring us back in time to see how the silos were created in the first place, in order to properly lay the stage for the grand finale in season 4. Check it out below, and then we'll discuss more details:

Silo season 3 is the show's most daring season yet

Silo adapts the hit book series of the same name by Hugh Howey, and so far it's had a pretty excellent run on Apple TV. The first two seasons cover the events of the first book, Wool, in a fairly straight-forward fashion — albeit with some expansions from the source material to feature more of the show's cast outside of its lead, Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson). However, the third and fourth seasons will face some more unique challenges, due to the nature of the second book, Shift, which focuses on a largely new cast to explain the origins of the silos.

The teaser confirms that Silo season 3 is leaning into that unique angle of Shift, as we see a flash of the barren ground harboring the silos flash to the past, where it's a verdant green field. But considering how much Ferguson and the rest of the present-day cast feature in the teaser, I wouldn't expect season 3 to stick slavishly to the source material. It would have been crazy to leave Rebecca Ferguson and the rest of the cast off-screen for nearly an entire season, so I'm anticipating the show will combine some events from Shift and Dust for these final two seasons of its run.

Silo season 2 ended with a flashback to before the apocalypse, where viewers were introduced to new characters Donald Keene (played by Succession's Ashley Zukerman) and Helen (played by Game of Thrones veteran Jessica Henwick, a young Congressman and reporter, respectively. These two characters play a major role in Shift, and are set to play feature in a big way in season 3, where they'll lead a seperate storyline set in the "Before Times."

Everything about this teaser hints that we'll be dialing back the clock to discover the origins of this dystopian sci-fi world, from the way the present-day Silo 18 characters move backward through their scenes, to the glimpses of the past timeline, to Juliette's ominous voiceover stating "Before we can know why everything is as it is, before we can know how it all will end, we need to understand how it all began." There's a feeling that Silo is upping the stakes significantly with this season, now that Juliette has returned to her home and the true threat to her people is becoming clearer.

Silo season 3 cast and synopsis

Apple released an official synopsis for the season to go along with this new teaser, which confirms that dual timelines will be employed for season 3:

Season three of “Silo” continues the saga of a dystopian society of 10,000 people living underground under mysterious circumstances, while revealing an origin story set centuries earlier. In the present, Juliette Nichols (Ferguson) survives her forced “cleaning” but returns with memory loss as the silo recovers from rebellion and faces a dangerous new threat. Meanwhile, in the “Before Times,” journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) and Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) uncover a conspiracy that pulls them into a chain of events with catastrophic, irreversible consequences.

Helmed by showrunner Graham Yost, Silo's third season will feature the return of all the actors we've come to know from the first two seasons, including Rebecca Ferguson, Common, Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, Alexandria Riley, Shane McRae, Remmie Milner, Rick Gomez, Billy Postlethwaite, Clare Perkins, and Steve Zahn. The "Before Times" storyline will feature apperances by Laura Innes, Jessica Brown Findlay, Morven Christie, Reed Birney, and Matt Craven, with Zukerman, Henwick, and Colin Hanks billed as new recurring cast members. Ferguson serves as an executive producer on the series in addition to being its lead star.

Notably, Tim Robbins does not appear on the cast list. That's not much of a surprise, considering the fiery end his character got at the end of season 2. However, the trailer does show a glimpse of him; it's not clear if that's footage from a prior season being reused, or whether he'll appear briefly in a guest starring capacity. Either is possible, especially considering the timeline shenanigans Silo season 3 will employ.
