Sophie Turner injured during Tomb Raider filming, production 'briefly paused' for recovery

With video game adaptations suddenly hot thanks to Fallout and The Super Mario Bros films, it’s no shock that one of the medium's top characters is getting a new shot at live-action. That’s Lara Croft in Prime Video’s coming adaptation of the Tomb Raider games.

Sophie Turner of Game of Thrones fame was cast as the pistol-packing archaeologist and was highlighted by a publicity photo of Turner looking just like the video game character in all her 1990s glory. The fact that the show is written and executive-produced by Emmy Award winner Phoebe Waller-Bridge has also drummed up even more attention.

However, according to Variety, production on the series, which began in January of 2026, has been paused as Turner was injured during filming. It’s unclear what happened, but The Sun first reported that Turner aggravated a pre-existing back injury. Prime Video issued a statement to Variety:

“Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.”

There’s no timeline yet on when Turner could return. The Sun article had speculated the production was shut down for at least one month and speculated it could be up to six months, but that’s not confirmed. Deadline's report says the shutdown will only be two weeks, with the crew being paid.

It’s a setback to be sure for the show, as losing its lead for even a small amount of time pushes everything back. Given that this is a role that requires performing athletic stunts and dangerous actions, Turner will need to be in good physical condition to handle it all.

This is a demanding role, as other actresses can attest. Angelina Jolie played Lara in the 2001 film and its 2003 sequel, The Cradle of Life. Alicia Vikander then took on the part in the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot. Both actresses had to endure months of training to prepare for the role, with each performing many of their own stunts.

Turner is used to major productions thanks to her time with franchises like Game of Thrones and X-Men, yet Lara is her first role requiring such extensive physical stunts. It’s still unclear how this injury happened, and hopefully it is a minor injury that she can work through. With the series expected to air in 2027, a delay would be a major obstacle for Prime Video, which has invested heavily in the series.

Turner herself hasn’t commented on this yet, so hopefully it’s just a minor injury and the show resumes filming quickly. However, it proves that playing Lara Croft can be as dangerous for an actress as any of the famous adventurer's daring quests are for Lara herself.

Tomb Raider is currently slated to debut on Prime Video in 2027. We'll be on the lookout for more updates.
