The Wheel of Time is the best high fantasy show on TV at the moment, and we here at WinterIsComing are praying that Amazon and Sony make the right call and renew it for a fourth season, and hopefully well beyond that. Right now, despite the third season getting rave reviews and solid viewership (Amazon hasn't released official figures but the signs are good), we don't know if the show will return after the season finale airs this week. That would be a huge shame, since the show is just about a third of the way through adapting Robert Jordan's epic book series and just keeps getting better.
Like us, the cast members are hoping for the best. "We don't know much," Daniel Henney (Lan) told Tech Radar last month, before the third season began airing. "We're just hopeful and have all of our fingers crossed."
Henney was there with Josha Stradowski, who plays Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn himself. "Season three is something we're incredibly proud of," Henney continued. "Watching it back, I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. I'm sure Josha will agree that this isThe Wheel of Time we set out to make."
Stradowski did, in fact, agree. In fact, he went a bit further: "Yeah, we're confident [that a fourth season will be greenlit]," he said. "When I was reading the book series, it wasn't until book four [The Shadow Rising, which season three is based on] that I thought 'Wow, okay, now I understand why so many copies have been sold'. I feel like season three is where we found our form, so we've all got our fingers firmly crossed."
I agree with everything he says. The Shadow Rising is one of the best books in the series, and does indeed feel like a turning point. It's the same for the show. I enjoyed the first season of The Wheel of Time and really liked the second, but it wasn't until this third season that I started to fall in love with the show. The world is expanding, the characters are cohering, and the storytelling is getting bolder and more exciting. I now need to take this journey all the way to the end.
Will I get to? I'm happy that the Dragon Reborn is confident. Hopefully, Amazon has some good news to share with us after the season 3 finale airs this Thursday. If they don't renew the show, I will personally break the seal on the Dark One's prison...or I'll pout on Twitter, one of the two.
