While we are officially going to see Carol again in Pluribus season 2, it might well be a while before the show returns to our screens.

Even with the minimal marketing from Apple TV, Pluribus garnered significant interest from viewers due to being made by esteemed Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan. The series is about as unique as you can get. It follows Carol (Rhea Seehorn), one of the few people unaffected by a cosmic hive mind virus that infects humanity, as she grapples with the drastic change to society surrounding her.

Pluribus season 1 took the world by storm. Airing weekly, viewers flooded to the streamer, each week being surprised by new cliffhangers and revelations. By the end of season 1, it cemented itself as Apple TV's most successful show, beating out Severence. .

Season 1 ended with a monumentally big setup. After myriad attempts at trying to change the world back to the way it was, and learning that she's being prepped for conversion, Carol decides to take things nuclear... literally. She orders the delivery of an atomic bomb to her very doorstep in New Mexico. This bombshell serves as the ultimate ending for season 1.

The good news (which will come as no surprise) is that Pluribus is officially returning for season 2. A renewal was never really in doubt. But what is a little frustrating is that the follow-up remains some time away. In a recent Apple TV press day attended by The Hollywood Reporter, creator Vince Gilligan confirmed that, yes, the upcoming season is actively being worked on. “We’re plugging away,” he said. “My writers are plugging away. All the folks, if you like the show, thank you for getting us here on this stage. It takes a long time to come up with these episodes."

Additionally, he added that progress is being made, although nothing is imminent. The process is a marathon, not a sprint. "We are deeper into the process at this moment than I would like, considering how few episodes we have figured out. But it takes some time, just as it did the first season.”

In terms of timing, he plays it coy. If one thing is for certain, don't expect annual seasons. “We appreciate everybody’s patience,” he said. “But it ain’t gonna beThe Pitt, coming back every year. I wish it would be because it’s an awesome show that’s old-school, like we used to doThe X-Files [when] we’d come back the same month every year. It will not be like The Pitt. We’ll come back the same month — just the question is what year.”

Our patience will no doubt be tested, but we're willing to wait. In the meantime, Pluribus season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV — give us all your theories!
