Fans of Wednesday are in for a jaw-dropping surprise! Just when you thought one of Nevermore Academy's most memorable figures was gone for good, news has broken that this beloved character will be making a triumphant return in season 2.
Remember Larissa Weems, aka Principal Weems? Nevermore Academy's clever, commanding, and unforgettable headmistress, who had the ability to shapeshift into any person or being. Well, she's just been confirmed to make a shocking comeback in Wednesday season 2 part 2. According to Cosmopolitan, Netflix announced this incredible news at a live fan event in Australia on Aug. 14.
Gwendoline Christie, who portrayed the iconic Principal Weems character in Wednesday season 1, appeared on stage at the event alongside Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton, much to the delight of fans. During her entrance, a clip of Weems’ voice played, teasing her dramatic season 2 return with the line, “Did you really think Nevermore would let me go so easily? I was never gone, you just stopped looking.”
Her return has been further confirmed in the newly released Wednesday season 2 part 2 trailer that we shared right below!
How is Weems returning in Wednesday season 2?
So, how exactly is the hit fantasy series bringing Weems back? If you recall from the season 1 finale, Weems appeared to meet a tragic end after Miss Thornhill injected her with nightshade poison, with Wednesday and the audience believing she had been killed. Well, it looks like she's really dead because she's revealed to be Wednesday's new spirit guide in the season 2 part 2 trailer.
Wednesday's ancestor, Goody Addams, served as Wednesday's spirit guide in the first season. However, Goody returned to the afterlife after helping Wednesday defeat Joseph Crackstone. In the first half of season 2, a new spirit guide for Wednesday was mentioned several times, with Morticia even offering to be Wednesday's temporary spirit guide until she has a more permanent one. Of course, Wednesday wasn't exactly thrilled by the idea and rejected her mother's offer.
It doesn't look like Wednesday is too happy about Weems being her spirit guide either based on the trailer, but she's likely to listen to her advice over her mother's. Besides Weems' return, the trailer also teases that the final episodes will focus on Wednesday trying to take down Tyler for good. It'll be interesting to see how Wednesday balances following Weems' guidance with her own instincts, and whether this uneasy alliance will give her the edge she needs to finally defeat Tyler.
Fan theories about Weems
Before news broke that Weems would be staging a comeback, fans were already buzzing with theories that she might still be alive. For example, some speculated that Weems may be posing as the Addams family butler, Lurch. They felt like the close-up shot of Lurch at the end of the first season, when he's driving Wednesday back home for the summer, could have been a subtle hint from the show.
Then, there's the matter of the first half of the second season giving Lurch more screentime. This had only fueled fan speculation that Weems could have been inhabiting his form all along, cleverly hiding in plain sight while plotting her next move. However, there were other fans who believed she could be posing as another faculty member at Nevermore. For example, some thought she might be masquerading as Principal Dort or the new music teacher, Isadora Carpi, after both characters seem to exhibit suspicious behaviors.
But now all of these theories can be shut down. Weems will be returning for part 2, just not in disguise as anyone else.
The remaining four episodes of Wednesday season 2 is set to be released on Netflix on Sept. 3.
