When Fallout season 2 releases on Prime Video and how many episodes there'll be

It's been over eighteen months since Fallout aired its first season, and while that may seem like a long time, the wait for season 2 is almost over. In the age of streaming, multi-year waits are unfortunately pretty common. The biggest gap I can think of is the 3 years between Severance seasons 1 and 2 on Apple TV. Thankfully, Amazon's addition to the Fallout franchise has been prioritized by Prime Video.

The Fallout season 2 trailer dropped a while back. It provided some compelling hints about season 2's plot as well as key easter eggs pertaining to the game series. Because the Fallout show and games all belong within the same shared canon, the crossover in lore between the two branches of the franchise is almost flawless. Fallout season 2 is upholding this cool, combined-universe approach, making many fans eager for the return of Ella Purnell's Lucy MacLean to continue to multimedia adventure.

Fallout season 2 will release weekly on Prime — starting in December 2025

Prime made the uncharacteristic decision to release all 8 episodes of Fallout season 1 at once. The platform generally opts for a weekly release schedule with its biggest releases, although it has been known to air multi-episode premieres as well. So, Fallout fans were treated to a sci-fi binge fest when they were suddenly able to blast through season 1 on April 10, 2024.

Now that Amazon is aware of Fallout's broader appeal, it isn't repeating the season 1 release format. Instead, Fallout season 2's first episode will drop on its own on Wednesday, December 17, 2025. After that, a new episode will arrive each Wednesday. The finale is scheduled for release on February 4, 2026. Staggering season 2's release makes it more likely that Fallout will remain in active discussion for longer. While Fallout season 1 made waves, it was quickly swept aside for newer shows.

Fallout season 2 will have the same number of episodes as season 1

A nice round total of 10 episodes per season is often how shows on streaming services are produced, but it's not always the case. Fallout season 1, for instance, was just eight episodes long. While the show's overnight success could certainly have earned Fallout season 2 more episodes than the run that preceded it, Amazon seems content with keeping things the same in this respect for the show's comeback. So, Fallout season will also be eight episodes long.

This news may be disappointing for some, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. More episodes don't always mean a show will be better than a shorter competitor. What's more important is that the story being told gets enough time to unfold properly, and that it isn't bulked out with unnecessary filler that sucks all the pace out of proceedings. If eight episodes provide enough time to do that, there's no point in making more. Plus, with more TV to watch than ever before, shorter runs allow audiences to explore as many other projects as possible.

Fallout season 2 won't be the show's final run

There was always a risk that Fallout's decision to align its canon with the games would be alienating to those who hadn't played them. That said, the show and the source material have been produced to be largely independent of each other, making it possible for everyone to enjoy the Amazon show without missing out on all that much if the audience has no knowledge of the games.

Fallout season 1's immense success resulted in Amazon greenlighting more episodes. In fact, the project was so hyped that season 2 was announced just a week after season 1 dropped. The buzz surrounding the show hasn't died, as proven by the fact that Amazon has already given the show an early greenlight for a third season. Fallout season 3 was announced in May 2025, long before even a season 2 trailer had materialized. With any luck, it won't be long until Fallout season 4 also gets the nod from Amazon.

Fallout season 2's first episode will arrive on Prime Video on December 17, 2025.
