Back in November, Dark Horse Comics announced that they had partnered with HBO to produce a line of Game of Thrones collectibles and other memorabilia. This limited-edition Daenerys Targaryen bust, which we are exclusively revealing, is the first result of that partnership. Details on how to get this collector’s item is in the full press release after the break.
Winter Is Coming: Pretty cool! Can’t wait to see what else Dark Horse comics has in store.
DARK HORSE ANNOUNCES GAME OF THRONES DAENERYS LIMITED-EDITION BUST
DARK HORSE DELUXE TO PRODUCE LIMITED COLLECTIBLE BASED ON THE ACCLAIMED TELEVISION SHOW
MILWAUKIE, OR, February 14—Dark Horse Deluxe is proud to announce, in partnership with HBO, a forthcoming limited-edition Game of Thrones sculpted bust. This beautiful collectible depicts the popular character Daenerys Targaryen (portrayed in the series by Emilia Clarke) with a newly hatched baby dragon on her shoulder, recalling the striking closing scene of the first season of the acclaimed HBO television series.
“We worked hard to capture the essence of Daenerys and the dragon,” noted Dark Horse’s VP of Product Development, David Scroggy. “We worked closely with HBO to develop these details, and other aspects such as the base design, which is an elaborate tapestry element from the opening sequence designed to mimic old carved wood material.”
The bust will be revealed to the trade at International Toy Fair in New York, February 12–15, 2012. It will subsequently appear to the collector market as a solicitation in the Dark Horse section of the March 2012 issue of Diamond Previews and other venues. The bust is scheduled for in-store release on June 20, 2012.
Sculpting was executed at Gentle Giant Studios in Burbank, California, an industry leader in prototyping three-dimensional works for the film, toy, and collectibles fields. Both Dark Horse and HBO Licensing supervised the work in progress daily. The piece took three months to complete, moving from concept through sculpting and painting. It will come forward as a hand-numbered limited edition, edition quantity to be determined. The bust is 7 inches tall and approximately 8 inches wide.
Based on the best-selling fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones debuted on HBO in April 2011, and the second season will premiere on April 1, 2012. In a land where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime, trouble is brewing. From the scheming south and the savage eastern lands, to the frozen north and the ancient Wall that protects the realm from the darkness beyond, two powerful families are engaged in a deadly cat-and-mouse game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. As betrayal, lust, intrigue, and supernatural forcesshake the four corners of the Kingdoms, their bloody struggle for the Iron Throne will have unforeseen and far-reaching consequences.

Find some way to remove that dragon and…well…it’s a start…

Eh, that bust is not inspiring, perhaps because it’s missing Daenerys’ bust, the other most memorable part of that scene imo.
I was going to post this totally O/T in the other thread but it actually relates a bit. Some artwork inspired by Game of Thrones but without the heavy hand. It’s Fashion Week here in New York and designers for Helmut Lang claim they were inspired by Game of Thrones. It’s not a direct analogy at all, but you can see how some of the fur trimming and leather can draw a line from the show. Some of the outfits are pretty cool.

It’s not the best of likenesses.

Well it is certainly not the worst likeness I’ve seen. Not by a long shot. It’s actually very good.

Yeah, I was ready to shell out some money until I got a close look at the picture. It’s kind of funny that before episode 10 last year I was worried about the dragons looking cheesy, but with this I would pay for the dragon sculpt but not when you put it on the cheesy Dany sculpt.

Sorry, but pretty cool? Do people actually buy this kind of junk? Where do you put it – in the china cupboard next to Grandma’s toby jug collection? The teenage boy’s bedroom? Just yuck.

Eh…
People collect all kinds of weird shit. What’s weird to some is a treasure to others.

I’ve seen the other GoT busts, think there’s a Ned, Sandor & Gregor one & they all look pretty cheap & nasty… Sandor looks like he’s trapped in a chimney!
At least the dragon on her shoulder looks like the dragon in the show… unlike Dany who looks like some stand-in….
In fact, I’m pretty sure there’s already a Dany one….

houndlover,
Any previous Busts/Statues made (such as that Dany one) are based on the books, this new range is based on the show.

Awesome! I’ve dreamed of Dany’s bust since the first episode.

I was looking forward to see licensed stuff from Dark Horse… and I still am.
Whole idea of bust is kinda creepy for me, especially cut this way, chainsaw-like.
The details look promising, though.

I guess they’re aiming for the Skymall market segment.

They’d do better selling replica armillary spheres.

Not a GREAT likeness, but not bad at all. I’d get that.
Where would I put it? Here in my office, I’ve got a shelf with my “stuff” A football helmet, an diecast metal USS Enterprise; two 1/6th scale model guitars, and a bunch of books.
The problem is the price. Would I pay $100? Sure – no problem. $200? Mmmaaaaayybee…. $300? No. And I bet this is at least $399 – outta my range. (Did they show a price and I missed it?)

Ed,
Heh when they make a shirtless Jaime, I’ll consider it.

I love this bust, sorry to anyone else that doesn’t but I can see a very good likeness of the dany from the tv show. I love how she has the dirty look to her like she did in the show, the base looks awesome. Frankly I don’t want the busy any lower because I like having my figures out on display and if my mom walks in and sees boobs just hanging out she would freak out. I really hope this is not too expensive as I really dont have a big budget for these things!
