We have just heard from a reliable source that the shooting of Game of Thrones season 3 is to commence soon, namely on July 9th. The prepping for the shoot has started and will take place over the next two weeks.
Hear Me Roar: Sounds legit. This means they are starting some two weeks earlier compared to last year. In addition, if that is the case, then casting announcements should really be here any day now.
Update: Extras NI has begun booking extras for season three. More proof that filming is imminent.

This can mean only one thing, casting announcements forthcoming.
My guess is filming is starting early because of Dany’s storyline in Astapor, maybe summer is slow tourist season in Morocco (because of heat) thereby cheaper, then again it may not be. I betcha the dragons are bigger in the first episode (I’ll even place a wager), because it would be a good way of showing passage of time between seasons.
As for budget, I figure it is reduced this season (no Blackwater), even Dany’s closing scene for the season in Astapor with massacre (best mind *$ing finale) doesn’t warrant that much.
I agree Jaime, cannot wait to hear Cillian Murphy is cast as Ramsey, and Cirian Hinds as Blackfish.
Bring on the announcments D&D, please.

good points Hear Me Roar, &tysnow,
they probably want as much time working on the CGI for the dragons so i would wager that it will be Dany’s scenes filming first and therefore, much to my dismay, that Emilia will not be making an appearance at SDCC

While I was mentioning Astapor and casting announcements, a role came to mind I rarely hear about on this site, that of Greyworm, a major minor towards the end of this upcoming season, but a role that grows as the series progresses.
So if noone has mentioned it yet I present the distinguished and talented thespian Chiwetel Ejiofor for the role. He is 35 ( I always envisioned Greyworm as being older, seasoned and more mature), he is athletic, British and probably to talented for the role.

Aegon the Conqueror,
David Wenham is awesome. I finally saw The Proposition this weekend and it totally blew me away. If they could get any of those guys; Wenham, Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, etc.. I would be stoked. Although, Pearce and Huston are pretty well established “movie stars” (especially given Huston’s pedigree), so they’re probably unlikely to sign on to a TV show, but it would be amazing if they could get Wenham or Winstone for a part.
Personally, I’d rather see Wenham play Beric over Edmure, but either character would be cool. As for Winstone, I think he’d make a great Victarion (or someone like that. He looks like a pretty big guy on film, so that could work out pretty well).
Varamyr FourskinsQuote Reply
How do we know there will be Whitebeard? He was not introduced in the finale and no Strong Belwas confirmation. If S3 opens with a time jump of a few months and Dany is already in Astapor then how will they be worked into the story.

Joshua Taylor,
This week my choices are….
Mance Rayder – Rufus Sewell
Daario – Hal Ozsan
Meera Reed – Anna Popplewell
Joen Reed – Oscar Kennedy
Selyse Florent – Haydn Gwynne
Edmure Tully – Tom Goodman-Hill
Brynden Tully – Peter Mullan
Queen of Thorns – Fionnula Flanagan
Beric Dondarrion – Kristofer Hivju
Thoros of Myr – Tim McInnerny
Tormund – Gordon Kennedy
Ramsay Snow – Domhnall Gleeson
Vargo Hoat – Jason Flemyng
Qyburn – James Fox
I can see Peter Mullan as Thoros or even Qyburn too… I just want him in the series!
I hope they cast a “bigger” name actor for Mance to anchor that arc for a while… The rest I can see being more character and stage actors or even relatively unknowns. Alhough if they add some meat to the Blackfish role that could be afun role for a bigger name.
darquemodeQuote Reply
Varamyr Fourskins,
I have pictured Winstone as Tormund Giantsbane (or Mace Tyrell next year maybe)… as well as Wenham as Beric honestly…. I think Pearce is too big, but HBO did nab him for Mildred Pierce I guess….
darquemodeQuote Reply
One suggestion for Ramsay casting: No sexy Ramsay. Don’t forget the fleshy, worm-like lips.
And, I get it. Most actors are sexy, that’s why they’re actors. But, if any role demands a creeper, it’s Ramsay’s.
Whoever he is, he should have a fat face (plump cheeks, puffy lips, round nose, wide chin, droopy earlobes, etc.). Find someone who looks like Dim from Clockwork Orange.
Varamyr FourskinsQuote Reply
Dogmayor,
Indeed!
Last season the scripts suffered compared to Season 1. I’m not sure it was the concetration on Blackwater or if it was simply the task of condensing a large book to 10 episodes while adding your own scenes to round out some characters screen time. Whatever the case let us pray to The Seven or the Old Gods for better scripts in Season 3!
darquemodeQuote Reply
darquemode,
Very true about Pearce. Mildred Pierce totally slipped my mind (so, you’re telling me there’s a chance). In my mind, he’d be perfect for Jon Connington.
Varamyr FourskinsQuote Reply
Varamyr Fourskins,
I’m not hung up on the fleshy face and worm-like lips, but I agree he needs to be a creeper, not a handsome, but scary-looking dude.
I really don’t get this fan obsession with Cillian Murphy playing Ramsay. He’s just entirely the wrong choice, plus he’s too busy and expensive.
Iwan Rheon is a great choice, too. I kinda like Andrew Scott, but he’s still maybe a bit too handsome. Not that I’d complain if he was cast.
There ARE ugly actors out there. He doesn’t have to be Hollywood ugly.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Chump Force 1,
I really hope they do not cut him!
I think they could add Whitebeard anywhere along Dany’s route to Meereen hoenstly. He can prove himself sooner after he meets her in the books…
Some one has to take the place of Mormont once Dany realizes he has betrayed her. Whitebeard is the perfect choice. Who else could be her #1? Daario? A Dothraki bloodrider?
Wasn’t there a comment about Ian McElhinney growing out his beard? Hopeful thinking on my part maybe…..
darquemodeQuote Reply
Josh Parker,
The thing about “ugly” or “pretty” is that they are relative to every society or era…. plus so much of it is attitude and stature.
The thing about Cillian Murphy is that he has 2 of Ramsay’s most distinct features perfectly – large wormy lips and ice blue eyes (and I think his face is fleshy looking too honestly). The rest is attitude and Murphy can play creepy like no one’s business!
While there are definitely more actors out there that could do the job, to rule out Murphy because he is “too pretty” is just odd to me. Most of the actors fans have picked for Ramsay are “pretty”…. outside of Born Gorman that is! XD

As for casting, my main hope is for Ciaran Hinds to play ANY role. I’d also like to see James Purefoy and Ian Henry Cusick play a part.
LexQuote Reply
I don’t think D&D are going to view ugly as a requirement for Ramsay. Different looking, but not ugly. I mean, this is TV. Tyrion’s supposed to be hideous. And Brienne has a masculine haircut. That’s as far as they go.
That said, I’d imagine price tag is a bigger issue for Cillian Murphy. It could be somewhat of a juicy role — although he’s done a fair number of guys like this — but they really haven’t gotten many people with his resume so it’s pretty unlikely.
AlanQuote Reply
Lex,
Any idea how far along they are into filming Political Animals? Ciaran hinds has a starring role in that series on USA Network so I’m not sure if he could make the Thrones filming period…
Purefoy is starring in the new for Fall FOX series The Following so he will be unavailable in all liklihood too sadly!
darquemodeQuote Reply
Alan,
I agree, I think that has been the number one reason he would not be cast since people started floating his name aaround. Same goes for a number of bigger named actors people float….
I think there could be a few roles in the series bigger name actors would take in the next few years that have enough face time and depth that the actors would want to play the role and HBO could rationalize paying a bit more…. That said, I’m not sure any will be cast in the end I guess.

My work colleague was fitted for his outfit today and he was cast as a Stark guard. His first day of filming is July 11 and he is going to see a funeral being filmed. My guess is Hoster Tully.

I think we’re all setting ourselves up for disappointment by hoping for people with busy schedules or who would be too expensive. We’re all forgetting that the three biggest names on this show (aside from Dinklage) only signed on because they were only signing for one season.
Ramsay, possibly Edmure and the Blackfish, Mance Rayder, etc. will all be signing on for multiple seasons, at least two.
So for roles like these, I suggest we expect that at best we’ll be seeing people at the same level of renown as Liam Cunningham, Stephen Dillane, Natalie Dormer, Carice van Houten, or, far more likely, Ian Hanmore or Daniel Portman. Which is to say, no renown.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Alan,
Brienne on the show is at least as ugly as I pictured her. Sometimes I wonder if other fans pictured her with bush-baby eyes and donkey teeth or something. When you see what the actress looks like in real life, I say they did a fantastic job uglying her up.
Plus, most of what made her ugly in the novels was her big eyes (check), wide mouth (check) and man-ishness (check and check!).
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
I don’t know if he’d do it, but Ciaran Hinds would make a great Doran Martell when that role comes around.

Peter Mensah for Grey Worm! Although he was recently cast for True Blood. Maybe with the way HBO handles primetime, there would be minimal scheduling conflicts? He was in the Spartacus series, I think he would make a perfect Grey Worm.

Mero is being included. We’ve already heard about an actor auditioning for him.
I still wonder why so many think Hivju was up for Tormund, just because of the beard and semi-beefy frame. Tormund is supposed to be an old man, even though he’s somewhere in his mid-30′s. Hell, I’m 34, I’ve got a large frame and a booming voice. Maybe I can be Tormund!
I have little doubt that Hivju was up for a Wildling role but I sincerely doubt it was Tormund, since even age aside we don’t know how good his English is and Tormund is a loquacious role. Even Ron Perlman (who I don’t like for the part at all) would make a better Tormund than Hivju.
Josh ParkerQuote Reply
Hell yes, casting is coming.
Cillian Murphy as Ramsay would be absolutely awesome, and I totally would love to see that. But.. there’s no way it will happen. Sure he’s way too good looking to fit the physical description of Ramsay, but I’ll take acting chops over physical resemblence any day. Besides, Cillian has the two defining traits of Ramsay: thick lips and pale eyes.
Honestly though, I wouldn’t be that surprised if Ramsay isn’t even cast. Think about it, he wasn’t in Storm of Swords at all. Though it would be lame to reveal what happened to Winterfell without an on-screen introduction of Ramsay. If Ramsay was cast though, what would he even do? Would they just show him in the Dreadfort flaying Theon? Is that really enough content to justify casting him? If it is such a small role, it does give hope for Cillian Murphy, as he wouldn’t have to be paid all THAT much for breif cameo

A poster here, forgive me for forgetting who, suggested that Ramsay might show up this year as a fellow captive who gains Theon’s trust and even helps him escape. He could then spend the entire season gaining Theon’s trust, and being promised a highly-placed position once Theon regains power, etc., only to then have him reveal himself near the end of the season.
It’s a good way to keep Theon in focus even though he sits Storm out, and think about how this show doesn’t require “major” characters to appear in every episode. A plot like that would take up five or six episodes. That’ll do just fine. And then maybe 4 episodes in Season 4 showing him as a captive and being tortured.

Really for Tormund an actor does not even need to look a certain way. They throw on a beard and long wig , and as long as the actor is large and has a large vocie… you have Tormund! XD

Tyler Perry as Ramsay Bolton would be lovely as it would require him to play a sadistic, disgusting, vile character unlike anything he’s played before. Not to mention the number of African Americans who would turn in would be stunning.
Michael Cera can provide the solemn yet quite wisdom of Jojen Reed, he and Issac should have intense chemisty on set. While Kristen can bring a subtle performance with all her lip biting and glaring to Meera.

Josh Parker,
re: the theory you mentioned about Ramsay playing prisoner at the Dreadfort
I was sorry they had to cut Theon’s scenes with Reek at Winterfell, however with the change of location in season 2 and Theon already captured, I find this theory to be a bit of a stretch. Granted, Ramsay does have a sick mind and loves to play games, but playing prisoner at the Dreadfort only to gain Theon’s trust – which he doesn’t need now that he the story never put him in Winterfell and in need of an escape plan – doesn’t seem quite right, though it will be interesting to see how the writers tackle his story for 3 whole seasons (2 at least).

I’m sure there are a lot of bigger named Hollywood actors/actresses who would love to play some of these characters, but I agree, most of them have projects going and things up in the air that would not permit them for this long of an obligation. As for your Nina Gold comment, I just got goosebumps because Nina Gold also cast for The Fall as well which in addition to having Ser Barristan and Roose Bolton in the cast the mini-series about a serial killer in Belfast stars Gillian Anderson, who I wanted for Catelyn Stark since day 1 (I love Fairley though!), this gives a slim chance that GA could be get involved with the show. I think she could do well with a long standing role as Selyse Baratheon. Granted, GA is much more attractive than book Selyse, but I think (given her bizarre Ms. Havisham in Great Expectations) she could make it work, and if she has good chemistry with Stephen Dillane they could be a fun, bickering couple. I enjoy Selyse Florent Nee Baratheon very much as a character, she’s just this jaded, cold, colossal nag. Another role that GA could sink her teeth into is Lady Dustin who given her appearance in ADWD and the constant mentioning of House Dustin in season 2 confirms for me that that storyline will be important in the Northern arc of ASOIAF. I would kill for a scene of Anderson talking to Reek about Brandon Stark’s douchebaggery and Ned Stark’s bones.
Oh fuck…..I just had brainstorm: Could Lady Barbrey Dustin be Jon Snow’s mother? And Brandon Stark his father? That could explain her hatred of Ned Stark, not to mention the Dustin name drops in season 2…do D & D know something we don’t?

Regarding my Lady Dustin theory…
Can you not see Ned claiming his dead brother’s bastard as his own to preserve the honour of the house and his brother and father’s memory? If people could imagine he would do it for Lyanna then why not Brandon as well? But if that is the case, what did Lyanna mean when she said “promise me”? Is this a reference to Young Griff/Aegon? And what if Cat knows about Brandon and Lady Dustin? She was to marry Brandon first, what if she knew as Ned did, that Jon is Brandon’s bastard through Lady Dustin? That would explain a lot of her hatred….because I think Ned would have told her if Jon was Lyanna’s boy. And she wouldn’t hate him as much I think.
Another motive for Lady Dustin’s hatred…there was a switch, her boy with Brandon died instead of baby Aegon (who belonged to Lyanna and Rhaegar not sickly Elia Martell) and Lyanna’s boy Jon was brought back to Winterfell. But why would they switch them? What are the circumstances there?

So he seems like a very plausible potential get. And I can see him doing justice to a very memorable role.

I see where you’re coming from but I don’t feel Murphy is too pretty for the role; that is not my reason for feeling he is the entirely wrong choice. Cillian cast as a simply an extremely creepy and unnerving character (which he would be, no doubt) would not be Ramsay. Ramsay is NOT Roose (and, for the record, while McElhatton is fine as far as his physical appearance, I’m mostly disappointed with the portrayal of Roose).
Hardy is somewhat of a bigger guy, would be physically intimidating, and I think he could pull off the role of Ramsay really well if dirtied up a bit (not too much).
Nobody is going to be scared of the Bastard of Bolton if he looks like he came hang-gliding in on a Dorito.
Again, Ramsay is NOT Roose, and I think a lot of people are forgetting that when they scream for Cillian Murphy.
LoFQuote Reply
Ramsay is described as solidly built, not massively muscular. In fact, it’s stated he’ll probably run to fat in later life so the most I’d give him bodywise is “stocky.”
KGQuote Reply
KG,
Wasn’t he described as “fleshy in appearance” or was that just his face?
I can’t recall for sure….I have not read ACoK for a while. I would think “fleshy” would mean not quite in shape and not skinny. Much of that can be taken care of with wardrobe fairly easily assuming he does not have any shirtless scenes.
Honestly though I think the most important traits of Ramsay are the pale eyes, wormy lips, (the long hair which they ignored for Roose), but mostly the ability to be vicious and cruel. Both of which come across due to acting more than phsyical stature in my opinion. I always took people being scared of him due to his reputation and his cruel and agressive manner and not because he was some looming big man. His physical stature is not part of the character in my mind really.

I thought the book was divided in two parts anyways. I bought them on amazon, the first part is called “Steel and Snow”, the second “Blood and Gold”. If D&D keep to the books, we´re in for a huge cliffhanger.
The first part ends with Jon´s escape from the wildlings after almost running into Bran. The RW is at the beginning of the second book.

There are a lot of good finale points at the end of Part 1, but nothing with the impact of the RW which most assume will make it into Season 3 even though it comes another 8 or 9 chapters later.
Of course they can add in all the Iron Islands scenes (from AFfC) into Season 4 along with a few other scenes so it could balance out nicely.
blackbird7309,
Yep in the UK and a few other countries in Europe Storm of Swords is in two volumes. Part 1 ends at Chapter 41/ Jon V I believe… (Jon escapes after being shot by an arrow) and PArt 2 begins with Chapter 42/ Daenerys IV (dany conquers Yunkai and all the freed slaves shout “Mother! Mother!”)
They will have to add in some Bran scenes to catch up on the Reeds and some of the Riverlands scenes with Robb too probably.

This is actually my first post ever on this website and I’ve been constantly refreshing the home page on this beautiful place since mid season 1 and have read easily over 75% of the comments since.
Anyway just wanted to put forward my two cents regarding casting Cillian as Ramsay:
In my opinion it just comes down to cost; GoT and particularly Nina Gold have created a cast of mainly unknown (and cheap!) actors (Maisie, Kit, Alfie, Sophie just to name a few) and these guys have constantly been impressing everyone since the show started. I have faith that no matter who is cast as Ramsay he will be as flawless as the rest of the cast, to the point that once everyone seems him in action he won’t be questioned at all (remember when Carice and Stephen were first announced? Not everyone was happy and even after the first couple of episodes people weren’t convinced. But when they showed there true acting chops like when Carice’s Mel gave birth to the Shadow Baby and Stephen’s Stannis showed his stuff at Blackwater, there really is no question about how good they are).
So basically I think the money is just better spent on a more unknown actor unfortunately. By the way, in case anyone questions it, I am a MASSIVE Cillian Murphy fan and have continuously watched movies just for the sake of him being in them (luckily most of his main roles are also solid movies) but I just don’t see him being on GoT to be practical at all, as much as I would love it.

Find a budding character actor for Ramsay and let him get into his groove. Lord knows we need more good actors and less incompetent pretty faces.

Yeah I agree with that. For the most part bandying around these Hollywood names is (fun but) pointless. They will probably go for someone who looks sort of familiar and we might have seen them in a UK TV series once but is not a big name.
Having just said that (and completely contradicting myself), if they did want to bring in a bit of star power, Ramsay is probably the best new character to do that for.
And to throw in my fun but pointless thought, a young Steve Buscemi would have been perfect for Ramsay in my opinion (although I cannot imagine him doing an English / European accent… has he ever for a role?).

As much as I’d love to see the R+L=J theory debunked, I don’t think the timeline fits in this case, she was already married at the time of Robert’s rebellion and, from what I’ve gathered, nothing points to her affair with Brandon being recent enough to make them believable candidates for Jon’s parentage. Also, why would Ned lie in this case? It doesn’t add up IMO. But I don’t have the books at hand, so I could be mistaken.

I completely agree. I for one love the fact that GoT has a ‘personality’ of its own, and a lot of credit goes to Nina Gold for rounding up these immensely talented actors, some of them unknown, some of them easily overlooked in other productions. Thats an idea that sounds cool at first, until you realize theres a huge plot hole: Why would Ramsay even pretend to be a captive? Just to fuck with Theon? That’s a very elaborate plot just to fuck with someone. In the books, Ramsay was a captive because the Northmen were trying to exact justice upon Ramsay, so he switched spots with Reek. He then tricked Theon into letting him go get reinforcements. In the show, the entire Ramsay subplot was cut and Roose asks Robb to let his bastard take care of Theon, which lets us know that Ramsay is not in bad standing in the North, therefore has no reason to pretend he is a captive.

Macha,
You are very wrong, my friend. It is a widely common theory because everything fits perrfectly into place. The ages and timing are almost perfect from what we know. Ned never lied, just withheld whatever he knew. Lyanna left him with one secret to keep and he harps on it throughout the books and even mentions it in the show. If R+L=J, he took it to his grave and there are only 1 or 2 people left in the realm that know the truth.

I think a lot of light drama actors can nail the heavy drama when given the chance. Some of the best heavy drama actors around startted as comdians so I am usually willing to give someone the chance before I rule them out just because they don’t fit my ideal mold.

I’m not a book reader but after reading the descriptions, that’s what popped into my head. Or would the whole getting kicked off Boardwalk thing make HBO not want to touch him again?
Theon Rules!Quote Reply
That’s a really good point on Cranston. I’m not a fan of generally getting actors who are already identified with a role in a lot of people’s minds — especially not one with either a lot of crossover or comedic. To that end, things like Nathan Fillion or Anthony Head don’t appeal — I see Mal or Giles, etc., and that’s not really what I want out of GoT. I don’t want Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise to the point that I forget his name in the movie is Ethan Hunt.
So I’ve been mentally opposed to these. But I suppose if the character is different enough and the actor is good enough and it might help to have a physical change, then people can pull it off and make you forget the old character.

Alan,
Totally agree on Tom Cruise, or any number of other “above the title” actors.
Of course we know actors are paid to play a part, but these days so many actors play so many multiple roles that seem to be shades of their true personality – accurate and fair or not.
Other actors seem to almost never let their own personality bleed through into a character and move from role to role without ever really being locked in to a role or genre or archetype. I personally love character actors like that FAR MORE than mega celeb personality driven actors.
All I know for sure is some actors really can move beyond their acceptable typical roles. Look at Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting or One hour Photo, and more recently and also on HBO…. Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson! Who would have thought Buscemi would be PERFECT as the heavy? Not me.
I try not to rule people out unless they are incapable of acting specific traits prerequisite to a role…. height, strength, youth, physical aptitude etc…. I guess that does not mean I instantly see and can accept everyone in every role exactly either. It’s hard to picture many actors cast against type like that.
I think with any”against type” casting you have greater risk of a bad choice, but the impact of the role is more powerful when it connects too.

Losing Mads Mikkelsen was one that really irked me.
I think he could have been near perfect in a handful of roles. Mance, The Blackfish, Thoros, Victarion and probably a few roles I’m forgetting! XD
I’ve queued up my big Nina Gold projects to ready myself for what is bound to be actors cast from previous projects she has worked on! XD
I caught 2 of the Narnia movies last month… or parts of them, and watched Red Riding Trilogy (again) this month. I have The Crimson Petal and The White next on my list, then The Devil’s Whore, and if need be I have John Adams and Rome on DVD too. XD

I just really want to send Nina Gold a big thank you. I don’t know how she does it, but she’s absolutely incredible. Without her I never would’ve seen the beauty of Sophie Turner (and before anybody freaks out I’m only a couple of years older than her). You just know she’s so good that whoever gets picked will be the best actor for the character.

Hollywood is filled with stars who accepted—or pursued—”against type” roles for much less money than their going rate, for career purposes. Unfortunately, virtually no role in GOT is large enough to tempt a above-the-title (A-list) or most B-list stars. Sometimes a show lucks out with stunt casting when an actor is also a big fan or lands a cameo when someone is filming nearby and owes a favor to the writer, director, etc. Again, not likely with some of the locations GOT is booked into.
Most likely big catch would be some UK actor or related-entertainment star (music, etc.) to build buzz, or someone angling for a role on an upcoming HBO show. We’ve seen two seasons of relative unknowns doing great work; I suspect we’ll see more of the same.

I think that the quality second tier actor like James Purefoy, Rufus Sewell, Matthew Macfadyen (and actors like that) may even be a step above most that will be cast in Thrones. I hope that they can get an actor of that level for Mance since he should have a decent role for afew seasons… Like you said though, there really are not many real meaty roles to be found outside of the existing cast.

Aegon the Conqueror,
Thanks for asking. Just looking back at what I have done in the show has made me appreciate how lucky I have been , as I know a lot of you folks would love to be involved.
My best face on camera scenes were from season one. Brans archery practice, King Roberts arrival at Winterfell and at the Crossroads Inn ( last Stark guard on the left as Robert leaves). I was also a Stonecrow with Tyrion as he first sights Tywins camp, and an Umber bannerman in a snowy Robb`s camp. Season two I was a Stark bannerman again at the Oxcross aftermath in various places, a couple of night scenes at Robbs camp, one when Robb takes Greywind into meet Jamie in the stockade, and another when the Stark men and the Karstark men have a punch up. Also played a Karstark bannerman when Jamie was dragged back through the mud after his recapture. ( That was a fun day..:) I am sure there is a few other scenes I have forgotten for the moment, but I can put that down to the medication.. Also played Mikken the Winterfell smithy in a scene in the original pilot, but I doubt that will ever be seen. Good luck spotting me, its a bit like playing where`s Waldo.

I’m on board with the idea of bringing Rufus Sewell in GoT as well, though he could be a tad expensive for any of the remaining roles. Contrary to what you and darquemode suggested I don’t really see him as Mance, but ultimately if he lands this part or any other I’d be just as happy. There is a slight drawback for me personally, because he has this easily recognizable face, the one that makes you instantly point and say ‘hey wait I minute, I’ve seen you in this or that’, and he’s done many period pieces to chose from. However, as I said, I love the guy so I’m willing to let that pass.
And Sophie Turner is a beauty indeed, both me and my boyfriend agree on this. I remember watching her last scene with Rory McCann (the ‘you wouldn’t hurt me’ part) and having to rewind it simple because I couldn’t pay attention to what she was saying. Because she looked friggin’ gorgeous. :)

Victarrion or Euron. Please don’t waste him in the Frostfangs. My earlier hope was

Yes, sadly even my pop culture references are dated at this point. As a character though, he’s got a bit of that David Caruso thing going on. Plus, it allowed me to do a CSI: Rome joke. Whereas The Mentalist: Rome doesn’t work as well.
Actually, if we’re doing currently popular detective shows in the U.S., he should have some non-scientific gimmick that he solves all his crimes by. Whether it’s the mentalist’s trickery and psychology or that one person who can’t forget anything or…Thirty Rock did a great spoof on it where Jenna was Alexis Goodlooking, a detective who was good-looking and good at looking.
Either way, more Zen. Most of the shows like Zen, or Sherlock (which is great) show here on PBS on Masterpiece Mystery (which used to just be Mystery!), which alternates with Masterpiece (which tends to be a lot of miniseries of classic novels done by the BBC).
It’s part of the year on Sunday nights (which is getting crowded). We could do with more like that and less generic police stuff (which sells here like CRAZY).

darquemode,
Hiddlestone would be an awesome Rhaegar Targaryen, he and Harry Lloyd could easily be brothers.
Whoever suggested Gillian Anderson (who I love but have seen her in many roles and know that she can be more than just “Scully”) for Ellaria Sand is thinking out side of the box. Which is good! Ellaria could be a “white Dornish” easily, add some chemistry with the Red Viper actor and you will have some witty, trashy comments said at the Tyrells and Lannister’s expense. That said, after seeing Anderson’s Lady Dedlock she could be a great Selyse Florent, she has that dour, wry I hate everything but “love my husband and Rhllor aura about her.” Plus to see the classic GA arched eyebrow towards Stephen Dillane, Melisandre, Davos etc encapsulating her raging boredom would be perfect. Yes, she won’t match the description in the book exactly, but who cares at this point?
That said, Hadynn Gwynn’s Calpurnia on Rome fits Selyse perfectly.
Branagh’s a ‘Sir’ now, so it’s hard to say if he would join GoT. I would like to see him cast out of character though.
And I am totally down for Guy Henry as Vargo, remembering him in Harry Potter and the fact that he was Cassius who to me was given very little screen time than he deserved in season 2, but he had great camaraderie with Brutus’ Tobias Menzies and made the best out of every scene. Sigh, Rome totally deserved a third season. If season 2 had been stretched to fit so that it ended with Phillipi leaving Antony vs Octavian in season 3….I can’t imagine the awesomeness. Plus we would have Max Perkis for the second season as well.
Off topic, but I really, really want HBO or someone to adopt Colleen McCullough’s Masters of Rome series, particularly the first three books. The Marius/Sulla rivalry deserves to be captured on screen. McCullough’s Sulla is one of greatest characters in literature in my opinion. If you haven’t read them…do, it’s basically if GRRM wrote a series on the 8o year fall of the Roman Republic.

I think that there’s a better chance they go even further in toning it down. If the dye is of significance, it may be simply dyed a more natural color. If it isn’t significant that he is dying and simply Tyroshi flamboyance, I bet they forget that altogether.

I’m more of an obsessed fan than an expert…. but thanks! XD
Winter, Hear Me Roar, Rabbit…. and the rest would have a better idea since they have a better grasp on the shooting schedule than me.
Last year they started a couple weeks later and we had got a lot of news a couple weeks into shooting. If that pattern follows then maybe mid-July there should be a lot of news starting to come out.
I’m sure some roles are cast now. …
I would wager if they are starting in Ireland that maybe the Brotherhood Without Banners are cast already or are close to being finalized, The Tullys, The Bloody Mummers, the Reeds maybe?
I don’t know their shooting schedule honestly so it is hard to guess exactly, but I would assume they would need to have those roles shot in Ireland cast earlier than say the new roles to be shot in King’s Landing (Dubrovnik), Essos (Morrocco… maybe?) and most of the new North beyond the Wall scenes (Iceland)… although I’m sure they will shoot some of the Jon arc in Ireland at some point.

If memory serves, a woman remembers reading that the hair dying issue was largely a continuity problem if dying a person’s natural hair and not using a wig. Keeping track of how much highlighting, how much of natural roots should show, how long a character’s hair is, etc. might be difficult from scene to scene if they are not shot all at once consecutively. Hence the use of the wigs and more natural hair color than may be described in the books, am I right? Makes sense. I recall that Tyrion’s hair was lighter at the beginning of the first season, but seems to have gotten darker over the year, now looking brown. So I guess PD hates wigs and doesn’t appreciate the hair chair? Not that a woman cares much, just musing.

I, for one, hope that they make Daario as he was on the page. He is not subtle in any way, looks or character! So I hope they go for the blue blue hair, etc! I really liked his character, and I know I am in the minority after reading many comments. But I hope they bring his written character to life on screen, just as I imagined him in the pages :)

What do you think of this guy as Daario? Raz Degan, saw him recommended on another site, thought he is worth consideration. Flip through his imdb pics.

A woman also found Daario an intriguing character, bad-boy warrior, imagine he’d ride a Harley in 2012. Black leather. Yeah.

Mrs. H’ghar,
Oh yes! This guy has the look of Daario in my opinion! Don’t know what his acting skills are, but the look is perfect. I’ve noticed a lot of the men don’t care for Daario’s character (haha!) I thought he was a breath of fresh air, I got so tired of humorlous Jorah. Daario is a cocky, arrogant bad boy, which is why Dany is attracted to him in the first place!
Can’t wait to see who they will cast as Daario, and Ramsay is the other one that I can’t wait for. The others I am not so worried about, but for some reason I had a big mental picture of these two characters in my head as I was reading :)

Mrs. H’ghar,
I really like him for Daario and in fact I have him as one of my suggestions on my casting page! XD
Suprised anyone else thought of him he has not done too many roles honestly, but I do really think he would fit the role well!
darquemodeQuote Reply
darquemode,
Maybe that’s where this woman saw him, can’t remember, been clicking around, he sure has the look of a devilishly sexy warrior rogue though! Seems there are a few good possibilities for Daario, but what of Vargo Hoat? Will they cast him or eliminate that story line? What say you GoT Friends?
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
Mrs. H’ghar,
Vargo Hoat is definitely in…there’s been an audition video leaked already. As well as Edmure Tully.

PS…A woman just checked out your whole casting page, LOVE some of those ideas, especially the Reed kids! Can’t wait to see who they pick!

Sorry to get off subject, I am going to bed in a few – I know you are a Tom Wlaschiha fan, so a happy belated birthday to him (June 20th) :)

Cool. A woman can see many possible Edmures, but isn’t really seeing anybody that jumps out as Vargo so much. darquemode had a few nice ideas…

But I’m soooo curious to see who they pick for Vargo. And will he say “Thappireth!” as well?

Mrs. H’ghar,
In fairness, I found Regan by surfing the net looking for random foreign actors too! XD
Thanks for the comment about my post….
Finding Jojen possibilities was hard! Had it been 3 years ago so many would be just right, but that crop of young actors all have hit puberty and look too old now! XD
darquemodeQuote Reply
A woman thinks it will be really interesting to see who they pick… the possibilities are practically endless! Wish they would throw us a bone already!
Mrs. H’gharQuote Reply
Mrs. H’ghar,
I never managed to see any of the Vargo Hoat audition videos, but from what I recall the audition (or two) did not have the lisp in it I don’t think.
The lisp is such a strong part of the book Vargo, but I can see it being too over-the-top to see it and hear it so often. I think it would need to be done just right and not overdone. That was why I loved the idea of Vincent Cassel as the Goat! Him speaking English heavily laced with French accent and just a tiny bit of a lisp and I can imagine it would be believable and work perfectly!
Like most of the roles they can go so many different directions and still capture the spirit of the character in the books to a large degree.
I’m very intrigued and excited for this season’s new crop of actors!!!
darquemodeQuote Reply
A woman likes your ideas. However, if I had to cast Vargo Hoat and wanted to have at least a slight lisp, I would look at somebody with the Castillian Spanish accent, which for some contains a sibilant sound that sounds somewhat like a slight lisp. It would sound more natural IMO. Of course, they could skip the lisp altogether, like they skipped the crying Xaro. Can’t wait to see how they go…

Looks like the actors gather for the shoot and the preparations are in full swing.
And now we want the casting news.

Looks like shooting starts befor july 9th. Or do they first have reheasels or something?

Mrs. H’ghar,
I managed to see Ned Dennehy’s audition for Vargo while the video was still up and I really liked it, however he did two takes and none of them had a lisp, so I presume it wasn’t specified in the casting call. But like I said, I really liked what I saw.
Alex Dubrovsky,
Cheers for that, good to hear!
Oh and guys, regarding that little chat we had about Rufus Sewell yesterday, looks like he’s booked for another production. Not a series, though, so not all hope is lost.
MachaQuote Reply
True perhaps but he is very difficult to work with and has always shunned “hollywood” work. I’d be surprised if he bothered climbing of his high “I do art” horse to bother with this.

Speculation and speculation and birthday wishes and guessing and sport’s talk and fencing and dresage….we really do need some casting news. D@D if you are reading this we really could use your help right now!

darquemode,
Just checked out your casting page, there are some really intresting choices there. However I can’t see the snow cone guy from Hawai50 as Strong Belwas, like the Stargate SG1 guy more.
Aegon the ConquerorQuote Reply
Aegon the Conqueror,
Ha! Thanks.
Christopher Judge and Taylor Wily were both more about me not being able to find an real adequate actors for the role than me thinking they were perfect. I saw both suggested online elsewhere and included them since I wanted to include Belwas.
I later saw Sala Baker and thought he would be great! I wonder if he is working on The Hobbit like he worked on LotR series….. Oh well, I am not convinced they will cast Strong Belwas even at this point so I’m not sure it is worth the concern over casting…..
darquemodeQuote Reply
Macha,
That is disappoitning news Macha!
Honestly I thought Sewell was one notoriety notch above where most of the newly cast Thrones actors will be, but I had hopes!
I would guess if that BBC project is airing at the end of the year they will start production near the end of Summer? Technically I guess he may have time for both, but I think that this might in fact rule him out completely… DRAT!

I can’t judge the other ones, but I meant that, for me, as a brazilian, that’s your biggest flaw hahaha. of course I’m kidding, you seem pretty nice.
and I mentioned soccer because the rivalry between our national teams is legendary; and basketball because the team Argentina is taking to London is a very strong one, like Brazil’s. but hey, we’re both competing against the USA dream team, which is off the charts.
but well, better to save the comments for the Olympic thread, right? hahaha

Macha,
I was reading about Coup since I thought it sounded familiar to me and I guess that Nina Gold cast it! No wonder I had heard of it before…
Looking at the cast in Coup for Thrones possibilities…. I found two I like quite a lot!
Gina McKee as Lady Sylese.
Nicholas Farrell as Thoros of Myr.
McKee is quite tall, slender, and had a fairly pointy nose and large ears of the Florents, plus of course she is a quality actress.
Farrell can have that sober intensity and gravitas of Thoros, looks worn around the edges and has that loose skin in his face of a man that has lost weight. I’m not sure how tall he is though or how physically imposing he is considering Thoros is a melee champion etc….
darquemodeQuote Reply
darquemode,
He looked quite tall in his little role in Pearl Harbour. Think he’s a solid choice for Thoros. No we just a flashback scene of him charging through a breach in Pyke’s walls with swords on fire!
Aegon the ConquerorQuote Reply
Aegon the Conqueror,
Thanks for the info…
I’ve seen him in a handful of projects but I cannot recall how tall he is! Hate when my memory is selective like that. I’m not sure that height is a necessity to the role of Thoros like it was to Sandor or Gregor Clegane and Brienne anyway….
darquemodeQuote Reply
darquemode,
Sala Baker is in fact not involved with the Hobbit which now makes him my favourite choice for Strong Belwas. Please David and Dan the duel in front of the gates in Mereen is bloody funny and entertaining! Please say he’s in!

Why is the budget so low that we get only 10 episodes per season? Why aren’t they 90 minutes long. Why are the other epic battles left for the further imagination of the fans. Please this is euch franchise on the level of the LOTR. You have now the chance to build it up so please do so.
PeterQuote Reply
Peter,
D@D have stated that production wise they only have the capacity for ten episodes per season. While a budget increase could do wonders, the chances of any tv series having the budget of even one of the LOTR films are 0! Just be thankful for what they have been able to do one their budget and that never again will 90 percent of the budget be needed in one green explosion.

I am SO excited! I finally got my mom to start watching season 1 with me and I’m hoping to catch her up before season 3 starts. You’d think 20 episodes in 9 months would be doable
