Israel being scouted as a possible location for Game of Thrones season 5
By Ours is the Fury on in Filming, News.

Timna Valley Park

The expansive production of Game of Thrones may be even more global in season 5, if the latest reports bear fruit.

According to a report on an Israeli site, recently representatives from the show have been visiting Timna Park, located near the city of Eilat in Israel, with an eye for this year’s filming. HBO’s scouts are apparently interested in the red stone formations and mountains of the valley and its desert setting.

The report makes passing reference to several other desert spots being scouted, including nearby Aqaba and Petra, Jordan. At current time, however, no final choices have been announced.

Ours is the Fury: Though the desert settings may also work for Dany’s continued Meereen storyline, the hunt for red stone mountains seems to point towards another location hunt for Dorne. The Red Mountains of Dorne separate the region from the rest of Westeros and could be used as a backdrop in season 5.

UPDATE 7/3: An unnamed source has confirmed to us that the report from Israel is completely false and that Game of Thrones will not be filming in Israel for season 5. False alarm!

Seeing as everything we’ve heard so far (location and casting-wise) seems to all point to Dorne, I think it’s safe to assume that most of S5 will deal heavily with Dorne and its plot lines, as opposed to Pyke, which makes up roughly a third of AFFC.

This is pretty ridiculous. Filming in an apartheid state is ridiculous and would make me uncomfortable as someone affected by the violence there.

To everyone upset with the discussion becoming political, this is the real world and it would be ridiculous to pretend that the show and its fans live in a bubble- people are actually affected by shit that goes on there.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to find some firm proof of him being the episode director as opposed to a DP since he does both kinds of work currently. Directing seems more likely this time. Especially since the show’s directors lineup needed replacements. (IMDB doesn’t count as a source, fans added that credit.)

Regardless of how you feel about the situation in Israel, anyone calling Israel an apartheid state literally does not know what the word means. Despite the obviously shitty situation in the Palestinian Territories, Israeli Arabs, be them Muslim, Christians, Druze of anything else are citizens and have the exact same rights as anyone else in the country. As said, if this was any other country in the region, all of which have equal or worse human rights issues, no one would be batting an eye right now. Calm down, people.

Anyway, the area around Eilat is really beautiful and should work handily for whatever they’re planning. Very exciting.

And yes i can confirm it was because the season 4 finale was so crap it took me weeks to come to recuperate from that atrocity that forshadows season 5 filled with Dorne and Braavos filler.

And now we have 2 reports of 2 seperate countries beeing scouted for Dorne. Sad, sad day my friends.

Dorne filler and Aryas ninja filler adventures deserve to be a spin-off series (that would meet the same fate as “Joey”) and not a part of the main storyline!!!

*Is building settlements in occupied land legal? NO WAY!

*Is Israeli government treating non-jews with brutality and injustice? YES

*Are Islamic terrorist horrible, terrible human beings? ABSOLUTELY YES!

*Is a big part of their existence related to inhumane treatment of Palestinians by Israeli government and continuing the conflict and resentment? DEFINITELY YES!

*Is God (if exists at all!) a realtor agent who promised a piece of land to a certain group of people 3000 years ago? NO, THATS A BIG BS!

*Is all this related to GOT? NO, but we’re all human beings and hopefully we have some conscience and humanity and are not blindly following any group and denying the pain and suffering of other fellow humans!

*At the end of the day, is shooting the show over there OK? YES, why not? It is part of this earth we live on and it has a good landscape & background for the story I suppose.

I hardly think that the producers looked at the filming schedule for Season Five and thought, “hmmm let’s see how we can turn this entire endeavour into a political clusterfuck!”

The picture above is beautiful and Israel, if chosen as a filming location, would provide and gorgeous background vistas, just like Morrocco did, which we will all enjoy come next season!

We should be grateful as fans that they are taking the time to scout and find the best locations for the show, instead of letting season after season unfold on a soundstage or studio lot with GCI and green screens!

There is no doubt that the situation in Middle East is extremely tragic and sad, from Israel and Palestine, from Syria to Iraq and elsewhere! A solution must be found, that much is clear.

However, I am not sure that getting prissy and bitchy on this website, adds anything useful to the necessary dialogue…but then again who am I to judge?! If that is what floats your boat…have at it!

Can I say one word about this, SECURITY, with ISIS not too far away along with Al Qaeda, etc. filming there would provide a juicy target for these hard core Islamist’s. They love kidnapping and ransoming high profile targets and affecting a popular “evil” American tv series would be a notch in their jihadist belts, therefore HBO and Israel would have to keep mum on locations and times.

I’d hate to see the insurance premiums for this location shoot.

We only saw the first character from there (RIP) this past season, the only other known character (sort of) who’s there is also apperently getting recast. So….I dont get the logic…Who is there??? Is this a new season 1 within season 5 now??

Or maybe theyre gonna just shoot 2 minutes of the show (1 min in spain and 1 min in Israel/Palestine) to introduce these guys, maybe that would make sense then …

    Zangbangboom,

I hate to say it but I read several weeks ago that Israeli forces moved into a 450 year old Palestinian farming village high up on the plateau of a hillside with breathtaking views of countryside and Sea of Galilee. They removed the 400 or so residents, demolished the buildings, all because a Israeli developer wanted to build an affluent Jewish community at the location, prime real estate.

This is why France, Germany, Spain etc are banning any economic trade between their companies and Israel. This reminds me of the god awful treatment of Native Americans by scumbag so-called Christian hypocrites of the 18th and 19th century America. I remember in my American West class, that genocidal maniac Andy Jackson (doesn’t deserve to be called President) after he forced out the Cherokee, he personally confiscated over 50K acres of their land for his own benefit. The land wasn’t raw wilderness either, but rich farmland the Cherokee had cultivated for decades. It was just a land grab by Europeans over the native inhabitants, same thing going on over there.

I personally am not against filming there, after all they have breathtaking natural landscapes, just wish everyone over their would treat each other respectfully and stop grabbing other peoples land that have been living their for centuries.

    Anti-semites never learn.

*Is occupation of a group of peoples land a moral and just thing to do?
    What about Occupy Wallstreet?
    I KEED!
    Are YOU an occupier?
    I don’t KEED!
So, if the “Palestinians” occupied the lands of Israel then it’s their land forever? Okay, so where do you live? Did some other “group” of people live there before you? Do you have the permission of their descendants to be squatting your fat ass on “their” lands? (Don’t blame it on people who came before you; this is your problem now. Move!)
P.S. You do realize that Jewish people “occupied” Israel back in the day, right? They called it “Israel.” They also “occupied” other lands in the middle east. They’ve been driven from those lands, killed for simply being Jewish. And “Palestinians” also occupied lands other than Israel. But you never hear anything about how those other nations who won’t let them come back to those homelands. Meanwhile, Israel has taken in Palestinians and treats them equally under the law and even gave up the Gaza Strip for the stupid Palestinians. Who promptly trashed the place.

*Is building settlements in occupied land legal?
Yes. Seriously. Where is the LAW that says those settlements are not legal? There isn’t one. Repeating a false statement does not make it true, nor does it make it “the law.”

*Is Israeli government treating non-jews with brutality and injustice?
No, just the ones who treat jews with brutality and injustice. Palestinians bomb and kill Israelis and provoke Israel constantly then run and hide behind the children and women. They never fail to fail. And the international community and the media play along. Just this week, Palestinians murdered to 16 year olds and a 19 year old in Israel.
    Just another day in Israel.

*Are Islamic terrorist horrible, terrible human beings?
Things that usually go without saying. Unless you’re an Israel-hater who has to prove his bona fides and then you say it because you have to, not because you actually believe it.

*Is a big part of their existence related to inhumane treatment of Palestinians by Israeli government and continuing the conflict and resentment?
By “their” you mean the Juice? No. See above.

*Is God (if exists at all!) a realtor agent who promised a piece of land to a certain group of people 3000 years ago?
You are mocking a tenet of religious faith. Unfortunately, your comedy joke is just not that funny. So, in addition to being a hypocrite, a liar, and a prating scold, you also fail to amuse on the basest of levels.

    Zangbangboom,

No, I mean “disputed”, because in order to occupy something, it has to belong to someone first. The future of those territories will be determined in the peace negotiations, if and when they’ll restart. Those territories are not legally part of Israel, nor they are or were part of any independent state since they were conquered from Ottomans by Brits in 1917, unless you count the Jordainan/Egyptian occupation of West Bank/Gaza respectively between 1948 and 1967.

Wall – actually, there is a perfectly good explanation for that and it’s called terror prevention. This wall saves lives by preventing terrorists from coming freely into Israel. Just look at the statistics of terror victims before and after it was erected. It will go down once the other side will stop trying to blow up me and my family/friends. It’s a necessity, as sad as it may sound.

Yes. Seriously. Where is the LAW that says those settlements are not legal? There isn’t one. Repeating a false statement does not make it true, nor does it make it “the law.”

Yes. Seriously. Where is the LAW that says those settlements are not legal? There isn’t one. Repeating a false statement does not make it true, nor does it make it “the law.”

Predictable nonsense being said about Israel.

The United States of America took land from the Native Americans. Every country on Earth is full of nations who took land from other people.

Should we reverse all of history?

No. Israel should not give up their land any more than any other nation. Every nation on Earth was built by occupiers.

We’re talking about something that happened well over half a century ago now. It’s done.

People throw fits about Israel, which is the same size as New Jersey, despite the fact that it treats all its citizens equally, including non-jewish people.

Yet people yawn at the fact that in much of the Arab world, women are stoned to death if their husbands accuse them of adultery.

Back to the subject at hand, looks like a good location for Dorne.

I can only confirm that I know another person who took that tour, and the tour guide stated that this was the location for S5′s Kingsmoot. The tour guide did not state that filming had already begun, however. He simply mentioned that scouting parties had been there and had chosen it for that purpose. So, low-medium reliability here…

I think that you are mistaken here. You DO get to choke me if I’m in international waters, because there is no law to prevent you. However, I am also free to fight back and choke YOU to death. It’s natural, rather than international law, and by natural law, Palestine has clearly lost it’s right to the lands of Israel.

    Alex Greyjoy,

Being Jewish is neither a reason to be hated nor loved. At least in my opinion. If the blue man does something cruel to the purple man , its still worth pointing out and trying to correct.

Your government/state/country whatever you want to call it is in the wrong on many issues. You better just take a look at some of the comments others supporting Israel made here. If they seem normal and OK to you, YOUVE GOT BIG ISSUES!

If you want peace, stability and security in your region and country you CANNOT go around calling the other side “stupid Palestinians”, denying them any right, ignoring international law and justify that!, building illegal settlement in middle of their communities, building a racist wall in the name of security and cutting off communities from access to each other, demolishing their farms and houses for expanding territory, not allowing them to form a country, not allowing them to have passport, travel without harassment, and on and on…

See, those people whether you like them or not, whether you think of them as inferior (as so many of your friends here obviously do) or not, are going to be living next door to you. You can’t just wipe them off! So you need to treat them justly to be able to live in peace.

I keep saying I have no attachment or hate in this issue but yet you say I will lose. Lose what? If your side cant even tolerate these statements (as the hate comments will keep pouring after this one!) then like I said YOU HAVE BIG issues to solve within the Israeli/pro Israeli side cos this mentality will lead you to nowhere!

Ok! Theres nothing anyone can say to wake you up from lalal land. You will go on insisting that Israel can do no wrong, that Palestinians never existed, and that piles of dead children and teenagers the IDF builds up is simply the cost to keep your bubble from shattering. Good Day!

Did you even read what I wrote? I said that every nation on Earth is built on occupiers to some extent. Why do you want to reverse history from 70 years ago? Where do you draw the line, then? Should all the immigrants in America sail back to their ancestral homes because this land truly belongs to whoever was here first? By that logic, most of the people on Earth should pack up and leave wherever they are.

I have empathy for all people who suffer. I have empathy for the millions of Jews who have been persecuted and executed for centuries as a result of hatred. I have empathy for the Palestinian families who were separated from each other in the middle of the 20th century. I have empathy for the women of the world today who are mistreated in Muslim nations. I have empathy for all people who suffer.

I have no hatred within me. I am not you. But I do pity you and the many other people like you who are filled with such hatred, because we are all a product of our genetics and our environment. You were told by people you trust that Israel is evil, and it’s hard to dismiss the people we trust.

I really hope this is the last time I ever discuss something not related to Game of Thrones here. It’s not a very good place for it.

I’ll ignore the rest of what you said because I don’t like to argue with people who have no idea about the subject they are arguing about, I had too much of it in the last 15 years. I’ll only address the part in bold – if my government has to build a giant fucking wall that costs a LOT of money to keep me alive, than I don’t care if someone on the other side suffers from it. They can go and cry to Hamas, Islamic Jihad or whatever bunch of insane inhuman murderers they are supporting. Not my problem. Your far-right racist views, quote “underestimate the civilizing effect Israel has had on the local Arabs”, are no different from the far-right racist views of the Nazis who later committed the crimes of the Holocaust.

There are many in Israel amongst the left, see for instance Peace Now, led by Amos Oz, who are against settlements and are striving to form a peaceful, two-state solution. In fact, many Israelis are against settlements and have nothing against Palestinians, but just as there were racists in South Africa and elsewhere, there are people like yourself who will stifle progress because of their hateful views.

My advice to you: choose love, rather than hate. Do not forget what hate can create.

The past cannot be forgotten, but we can mold the present to build a peaceful future. Mandy Patinkin summed it up best with this amazing speech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdjEALPzbwM

Just as Yitzhak was assasinated, however, there will be hateful elements in any society. Just look and you will find it, just as you’ll find hateful people on here on this very forum as well, from both sides. Yes it’s strange to go to Israel to search for filming locations when I am sure they could find decent landscapes in Croatia or Spain. They’re probably looking for something really precise and The Red Mountains fit perfectly. Now the question is why would they need them??? There’s nothing in the books that happens in those mountains… should we dare to hope for a Tower of Joy scene?? Like the one with Maggy the Frog???

Looking at that picture I guess it could also be perfect for Drogon’s lair.

    chamush,

I’d like to put it in simple terms – I don’t care if there are people on the other side who are not part of Hamas and such, as long as their more violence-prone friends try to blow me up when I take a bus to work. This wall saves lives, and if it means someone on the other side has to walk 5 hours to reach his workplace/school, I’m not the one to blame, nor is my government. I like being alive, believe it or not.

    Easteros bunny:
I remember when it was fun to read the discussions on here.

I think one can get some good-hearted banter still, EB, it depends on the thread. There are too many threads now (I try to read the ones I might find of interest – not always successful) and also too many pop-up votes on very trivial subjects, though there is a facility to close them without voting. Rancid comments don’t just happen on this site – I’m not sure where you are from, but in the UK there is a newspaper called “The Guardian” in which does a tongue-in-cheek feature called “Reel History” about films – not necessarily new – and gives them marks both for entertainment and historical accuracy. When the writer gave a critique of “300: Rise of an Empire” she didn’t praise it and gave it bad marks for both entertainment and historical accuracy- for example, she pointed out was that Artemisia DIDN’T die at the battle depicted in the film but that the character was portrayed a “revenge ninja Barbie”. The comments section was hi-jacked by fans of the actress playing the part with comments something like they only wanted “T&A”, that the film was based on a graphic novel so shouldn’t be expected to be true to history. The critic hadn’t said anything vitriolic about the actress – just the part she played. I don’t know why but some folk seem to get satisfaction from insulting others when using an internet nickname. Do they have discussion groups and Debating Societies in school these days, or does it depend on which school one goes to? My school did not really like people to go against the party line, but even we had some class debates which gave us some idea how to make an argument forcefully but without being rude.

False deitys. Lines on maps that don’t exist. People online arguing about it. And an advert in my face.

    Ha!

We (as a species) are a big fucking joke.

I disagree with this choice but only politically, the mountains will look amazing. I doubt though, that they are the only ones available on this beautiful rock of ours. For security reasons and just plain common sense, I’m surprised they would consider such a place.

on related news: Iceland Written Out Of Game Of Thrones

Originally, there were plans to film a battle sequence in Iceland in November but as the script developed the scene grew too large and long to film in Iceland at a time of year where sunlight suitable for filming was limited to 5 hours a day.

That’s where Theon was ‘baptized’ in season 2. They just called it the kingsmoot for some reason, either by mistake or who knows.

I think I missed the action, but I’ll have to say something about it. To all those that write off Israel as being satan’s child, if you don’t live here you don’t know shit. It isn’t nearly as simple as you may think. It would be impossible to just create a Palestinian country (as good as that deal sounds) given that there are Israeli towns and villages inside that territory (in fact, just now three kids were murdered by terrorists)- you can’t tear your own citizens out of your homes. That’s not to say that I think it’s smart to live there, and to keep building there (which is in my opinion a completely stupid move),

Even worse is blaming the whole of our country and it’s people for something our government did or does. I personally think our prime minister is an idiot, as do many MANY people here- some of the things he does just make no sense. Why he got picked again is beyond me (though to be honest we had a shitty selection all around- it’s sad to say he was one of the better options).

And no, the area that’s being scouted out right now is definitely not a danger zone (and I doubt they would scout it out if it was). You’d have to go beyond a border to get to a danger zone these days, it really isn’t so crazy here. The place is in a peaceful southern region.

And if we could just keep talking about GOT in a GOT website instead of hate comments that would be fantastic. This is just some more filming news- a beautiful location that could look great as the desert of Dorne or someplace in Essos. Why involve politics?

    Turncloak,

Yes, yes.. but we haven’t yet offended all the GoT fans for their nations’ respective history or gov. political agendas!

Good R’hllor, as far as I can see we just got done with the Israelis, the Palestinians, barely touched on the Americans and the North Koreans. We have ways to go yet… Can’t leave out the rest of the world now, can we?!

I agree with Lady Dayne on why they don’t film in US. Costs and rules are stricter here to hear professionals talk about it. The Badlands of WY are beautiful for the Red Mountains but I don’t get the desert feel. That’s just my opinion.

UPDATE 7/3: An unnamed source has confirmed to us that the report from Israel is completely false and that Game of Thrones will not be filming in Israel for season 5. False alarm!

    ^
What I’ve just added to the post. No idea where the Israel show got the idea from, but it’s apparently totally wrong, so no need for more fighting. Let’s move on, shall we?
