The female Doctor debate, Tennant’s new series in 2015, how Series 1 set an unbeatable bar, Doctor Who Instagram photos, new LEGO Dimensions trailer & more!

Good Thursday morning, Doctor Who Watchers!

More from Doctor Who

There’s a wide range of Doctor Who news and rumors floating around the internet this week, but most fans are still reeling from the Series 8 Netflix news and the 3D Doctor Who: Dark Water/Death in Heaven theatrical event.

Filming on Series 9 continues to wind down, with the finale and parts of episode 9 left to shoot. As you’ll see below, a few more details and set photos from official Doctor Who accounts on Twitter and Instagram have continued to surface.

There’s also news from Netflix that a new Marvel series should be released every six months or so, along with confirmation that Jessica Jones with David Tennant will be out before the end of the year. Good news, but considering Tennant is the main villain, it’s debatable whether he’ll make it past the first series still alive.

There’s also a new trailer for LEGO Dimensions that finally reveals the game’s plot, but there’s nary a sign of the Doctor anywhere in the footage.

All right, now that I’ve teased you, let’s get to all of those stories and more:

First, a recap of the top stories from right here at Doctor Who Watch:

Doctor Who and the Significance of the Garden – Dave Hill

"Perhaps the most obvious of these recurring locations in the recent history of Doctor Who is the garden that Missy in which made her debut. We first saw her in Deep Breath as she strolled through that garden, walking around the fountain and enjoying the flowers. Yet, this was not the first time that the location was used, as a more desolate and forgotten version of the garden was seen during The Girl Who Waited."

Is David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor “Darker” Than Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor? – J.R. Frontera

"By the time Ten regenerated, we knew who the Doctor was. We knew what would earn his respect, and we knew what would set him off in a fit of Time Lord rage. And he ranted and raged quite often, actually. A fact that’s easy to forget when you don’t re-watch his episodes enough and all of the Whovian internet in the meantime pegs him as “the lover” Doctor."

Do We Need a Female Doctor Who in the Future? – Tech Times

"Equality is a thing folks have been throwing around for the past couple of years, yet they are willing to promote it the easy way and forego doing the hard work. For example, instead of creating a strong female character from scratch, the equality advocates are pushing to change established characters."

The Terror of Success: Is Series 1 the Pinnacle of New Who? – Doctor Who TV

"As much as I’ve enjoyed Eccleston’s successors, there’s still something about that single season with him as the Doctor that continues to strike a deeper chord for me. Some of it is certainly his portrayal – the way he perfectly conveyed the sense of an alien whose sense of human values was as deeply felt as it was slightly off from ours, but ultimately it’s about the attitude driving it, especially that of head-writer Russell T. Davies."

Star Trek star beams aboard Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song – Blastr

BTS on Series 9: Skulduggery, Monsters & Clara Moments – Doctor Who TV

"Moffat says he is excited about the Zygons in Peter Harness’ “cracker of a two-parter” and how he thinks it’s nailed the “mid-season problem”. There’s a really good use for the Zygons, who he felt played a bit of a second fiddle in the 50th."

BBC Store to sell ‘digital DVDs’ of top TV shows including Doctor Who from this autumn – Digital Spy

"Due to the service’s digital nature, it is likely that niche content from the BBC’s past – that wasn’t popular enough to justify a physical release – could be made available for the first time."
