Big Finish announced today that Eve Myles and Kai Owen will return to their roles as Gwen Cooper and Rhys Williams in Torchwood: Forgotten Lives this November. This is will be the third chapter of the new series, wherein different members of the Torchwood team are all affected by the same alien plot. Torchwood: The Conspiracy with John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness is out first later this month, followed by Torchwood: Fall to Earth with Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones in October.

Interestingly though, Forgotten Lives will actually take place after the most recent Torchwood series, Miracle Day — showing what Gwen, Rhys, and baby Anwen have been up to since then. The first two releases in the new series actually take place earlier, sometime during Torchwood‘s first or second TV series (as evidenced by the return of Ianto).
Big Finish producer James Goss perfectly explains how great it is to have Gwen and Rhys back:
"“Captain Jack’s the poster boy, Ianto’s the style, but Eve and Kai are the heart of Torchwood. Listening to the two of them back together is an utter joy. We pick up their story after Torchwood: Miracle Day. How has life been treating them? It’s a delight to find out.”"
I couldn’t agree more. Torchwood was always essentially Gwen Cooper’s story; to not have her return for the new series would’ve left a huge whole in the story.

Forgotten Lives is written by Emma Reeves, co-creator of the CBBC show Eve and writer on Young Dracula, The Murder of Princess Diana, Belonging, and Doctors:
"“I still can’t believe that I’ve been asked to write a story for the brilliant characters of Gwen and Rhys. I’ve been lucky enough to write for Eve before, on Belonging, and I know that she has a unique gift of imbuing every syllable with the deepest meaning. Getting Eve Myles and Kai Owen, too, is basically like winning the writer lottery.”"
Big Finish say that Gwen will return in a later release in the Torchwood series, seemingly confirming that the entire team may reunite in the final chapter. There are two more unannounced monthly releases before then, though; here’s hoping we see Burn Gorman and Naoko Mori return as Owen Harper and Toshiko Sato as well!
Torchwood: Forgotten Lives is available to pre-order now, or you can subscribe to the entire series at a discounted rate.
