SPOILERS: Another character not seen for years returning for Season 6

And the comebacks keep coming. If you’re not up for a few good spoilers, head out of the post now.

We already know that Brynden “the Blackfish” Tully will be returning for Game of Thrones Season 6 after a two-year absence. Now, Los Seite Reinos has it that Edmure Tully, the Blackfish’s well-meaning but sorta hapless nephew, will be back in the mix as well.

Last we saw Edmure (Tobias Menzies), he was being dragged off to bed his Frey bride right before the Red Wedding kicked off. If the show follows the books, and pics of the Riverrun set suggest it will, the Lannisters and Freys who are besieging Riverrun will use Edmure as a bargaining chip to get the Blackfish to turn the castle over. Remember that report from a while back saying that a gallows had been added to the Riverrun set? In A Feats for Crows, the Freys threaten to hang Edmure if the Blackfish doesn’t cooperate. They don’t go through with it, but with Edmure back in the thick of things, odds are good that they’ll try this trick in Season 6, as well.

I’m a little surprised to see the show throw itself so fully into this plotline from the books after letting it sit on the backburner since Season 3, and after foregoing the opportunity to adapt it last year in favor of sending Jaime to Dorne. There’s an argument that this is too little, too late, but I’m excited to see this story finally play out on screen.
