Theory: William and the man in black are the same person
One of the most intriguing Westworld theories on the internet right now speculates that William and the man in black are the same person.
SPOILER WARNING: THIS ARTICLE MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
It may sound crazy to say that mild mannered first time Westworld guest William and thirty year veteran and mysterious bad guy the man in black, but it makes sense.
The basic idea is that William is actually a flashback from thirty years earlier, the man in black’s first trip to Westworld.
The theory is based on several things. First there’s the fact that the Westworld logo that we see when William and Logan enter the park and get off the train looks older and different than the one that we see elsewhere in the show. A logo isn’t enough though, there is of course more.
When William and Logan enter Sweetwater we see a army captain calling for recruits in the same spot that the sheriff was asking for help with a posse in the first episode. Now certainly the army captain could just be replacing the sheriff who malfunctioned in episode one, or it could be that it’s thirty years earlier.
There’s also the relationship we see start between William and Dolores. In the preview for episode three we see that Dolores and Williams relationship will continue to grow, and we also know the man in black has a long history with Dolores. The man in black’s history with Dolores is obviously much darker, but that may not be what it seems either.
And finally there’s the fact that William is going to end up knowing Lawrence, and we know the bad man knows him.
We also saw William very deliberately pick a white hat at the beginning of the show, and of course the man in black is all in black. It would be pretty amazing imagery to see the white hat change to the black hat.
We know that there was a “critical failure” happened in Westworld thirty years ago, it would certainly be an interesting twist if we were seeing two stories unfold when we thought we were just seeing one.
We’ve all be waiting to hear more on who the man in black is and why he wants to find the maze so badly, and Westworld might have been telling us all along.
