Theory: Why is Dolores the oldest host?

Here’s our theory on what’s going on with Dolores, and why she’s the oldest host in Westworld.

ICYMI: We don’t know for sure how guns work in Westworld, but we have been given some interesting clues about weapons in the park.

SPOILER WARNING: THIS ARTICLE MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

Warning: This article mentions our theory about the man in black and William, if you haven’t read that go read it first!

Dolores is the oldest host in Westworld, we know this because Delos head of security Ashley Stubbs said as much at the end of episode 1.  But why would Dolores be thirty years old? When other hosts in the park have malfunctions they are sent to cold storage, why not her?

After the first episode we were convinced that it must be because Dolores is special to Dr. Ford in some way, but now we have a new theory. We think Dolores is special to the man in back, and as Ashley Stubbs said “that guest gets whatever he wants.”

In episode one we see the man in black take Dolores into a barn and it’s heavily implied that he sexually assaults her… but we don’t actually see him do anything to Dolores. In fact the man in black doesn’t even kill Teddy until Teddy continues to try to fight him. On a second watch you can tell that the man in black doesn’t care if he kills Teddy, but isn’t really trying to kill him either.

So what could the man in back be doing with Dolores if he’s not sexually assaulting her? If the William and man in black theory is correct then Dolores was around for the critical failure thirty years earlier, and the man in black, as William, was too. We know that William has some sort of attachment to Dolores, and we know that attachment is going to grow from the previews we’ve seen.

The man in black was probably involved in the critical failure, perhaps part of the compensation for William for being part of the critical failure was that he became Westworld’s most VIP of guests. Perhaps he’s the one keeping Dolores in the world, and perhaps he’s trying to push her to become more than just a host.

Could Dolores be faking it? Could she be more sentient than anyone realizes and just playing along? It’s going to be a lot of fun finding out.
