No matter how much you don’t trust him, that’s the first step in knowing Lawrence. What purpose will Lawrence have in Westworld Season 2?

From criminal kingpin to tethered sidekick, Lawrence (Clifton Collins Jr.) was one of the more interesting characters in Westworld. We got to see two versions of this special character: El Lazo (outlaw) and Lawrence (the Man in Black’s personal assistant). But what was important was his special connection to the brutal Man in Black (Ed Harris). After the premiere of the season 2 trailer during the Super Bowl, we got to see a quick glimpse of him in the background. And he was still standing next to the Man in Black. What does this mean for Westworld Season 2?

Lawrence was first introduced and saved from hanging by the Man in Black. Then he joins the Man in Black to help him solve the riddle of the maze. We even learned that he used to help the Man in Black when he was young William to participate in the Ghost Nation adventures.

But it was when they reached the little village that the idea of the maze made us scratch our heads. After the Man in Black kills Lawrence’s wife, his daughter, without any emotion, said those eerie few words: The maze wasn’t meant for you. Yet, the Man in Black still kept pushing forward to find the meaning behind the maze. And behind him, was Lawrence following him every step of the way.

The odd bond between Lawrence and the Man in Black started right from Lawrence’s

introduction. We find him hanging to his death from a tree. This was first time we saw the Man in black help a host.  From then on, Lawrence played a special key in the Man in Black’s quest. He was always there for the Man in Black to rely on during times of need. We saw this when El Lazo blew up the Desperados to help save Dolores and young William, and he was used a decoy when they helped Armistice break Hector out of jail.

But it was Lawrence’s final act (whether he knew it or not) that solidified the bond between the two. It was when the Man in Black drained his blood to save a dying Teddy. All to keep Teddy alive to find the nefarious Wyatt character. Most importantly, he helped the Man in Black to solve the riddle.

This was the last we saw of Lawrence. But we did see him in the background next to the Man in Black in the Super Bowl trailer. So how could he still be alive and what does it mean?

If this is the Man in Black’s faithful sidekick standing next to him, how did he get there? Are the hosts now repairing their fallen

robot friends?

That would mean they know how to run all the lab equipment in the Mesa headquarters. Or maybe they leave a few workers alive to keep their friends operational.

This is probably not the case. What we do know is that Westworld is going to do some more time jumping. In season 1, we saw young William turn into his true self. But we never saw any of his background story during his other adventures in the park. Seeing Lawrence could signal that we may see the beginnings of his quest to solve the riddle of maze. Or we could even see how he got his fancy armor.

For Lawrence, we may find out why his story was altered from El Lazo to Lawrence. Did he exhibit any of the glitches that was making him sentient? Guess we have to wait until season 2 to learn more about the fate of our favorite criminal mastermind.
