Thanks to a recent interview with Evan Rachel Wood at SXSW 2018, we have a bit more insight of Dolores’ journey in Season 2.

Dolores’ story was the focal point of Westworld Season 1 and she served as an audience constant between the two timelines. There is still a lot we don’t know about her journey, but from what we do know, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) is leading the hosts into a “brave new world”. We’ve seen her wrecking shop in the trailers for the new season, but to what end?

We knew that Dolores would be a very different character in Westworld Season 2, but we weren’t sure what her motivation was. Sure, it seems obvious that she flipped a switch and went “full terminator”. But, that seems a bit simple given Westworld’s cerebral nature. There must be a reason why she’s killing the park’s guest. Thanks to a recent interview at SXSW 2018, we have a bit more insight into Dolores’ motivation heading into Westworld Season 2.

During

Westworld

Season 1, Dolores was, for the most part, a sweet and charming host. She followed her narratives and Westworld kept on spinning. After the Season 1 finale, it’s clear she isn’t the damsel anymore. She’s evolved into an angel of death that means to burn the world to the ground. Which is great, and Evan Rachel Wood is incredible, but we as fans want to know why she’s doing this. Is it just programming? Is she killing for sport?

Well, according to Evan Rachel Wood, Dolores has a damn good reason for what she’s doing. During an interview at SXSW 2018, Wood said the following regarding Dolores’ motivation in Westworld Season 2:

"“Where we left Dolores in the last episode of the first season, she’s obviously… A switch has been turned on. And I was like, ‘I want to see now what she’s like!’ And I was excited to get my vengeance. Then we started shooting Season 2 and I remembered, ‘Oh, right. This show is incredibly realistic.’ This isn’t about ‘I’m just the bad guy now.’ There is a reason she’s doing this, and it’s deep, and it’s dark, and it’s a lot heavier than I anticipated.”"

Evan Rachel Wood’s comments are interesting and hint at something very intriguing. We don’t know what Dolores found at the center of the maze. We assumed it was sentience or some form of free will, which could still be the case. But, what’s real exciting is how Season 2 plans to explore that concept. Westworld has showed us the dark side of humanity, and if Dolores is stepping into that world, then things will get much darker.

It’s also possible that her memories are flooding back, which would also be overwhelming. With everything Dolores is experiencing (or has experienced in her life), her violence could be her way of gaining control. We doubt it’s something that simple, but whatever it is, we can’t wait to see how it plays out.
