“Battle of the Bastards” director Miguel Sapochnik wraps on season 8

So far as we knew, Game of Thrones wrapped filming on its eighth and final season about a week back. From Sophie Turner (Sansa) to Kit Harington (Jon Snow), everyone has been saying their goodbyes, and the production held a massive wrap party for the cast and crew. But as with any good party, there are always a couple stragglers, and in this case, it seems director Miguel Sapochnik has just now peacing out.

Sapochnik is the director behind some of the show’s very best episodes, including “Hardhome,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “The Winds of Winter.” He’s basically the show’s home run hitter. So far as we can tell, he’ll be directing Episodes 3 and 5 of season 8.

Why might Sapochnik have been hanging around Belfast for a week after everyone else went home? Well, first, we don’t technically know for sure that everyone did go home, even if the main cast members signed off. Crew members in particular may have hunt around to review footage, follow last-minute instructions from showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss or even pick up a few stray shots.

For weeks, we watched as the Game of Thrones crew battered and set aflame the massive King’s Landing set in Belfast. If there’s going to be a battle in the capital city of Westeros, Sapochnik is definitely the guy to direct it.
