By Corey Smith
After what has felt like an eternity, Netflix has officially announced a release date for the fourth season of The Last Kingdom, its excellent medieval drama. That’s right, we finally know when we’ll see the further adventures of Uhtred son of Uhtred, Finan, Sihtric and all the rest of your favorites Danes and Saxons. Behold:
The Last Kingdom season 4 will be released on…April 26! We’ll probably all still be in quarantine then, so this will be a huge help.
The third season of the show was released way back in November of 2018, so there will be a 17-month gap between seasons. As long as get new episodes!
Season 4 will consist of 10 episodes, and cover most of the events from The Pagan Lord and
The Empty Throne, the seventh and eighth novels in Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories. “As Edward and Aethelflaed spar over the future of Mercia and their father’s dream of a united England, Uhtred tries to recover his lost birthright,” reads the official synopsis.
The Last Kingdom season 3 saw the show enter new territory as many long-time characters met their demise, none more central than David Dawson’s King Alfred. His son Edward has ascended to the throne of Wessex, but Alfred’s death still leaves the landscape of medieval England changed forever. With new villains on their way and new leaders in every corner of the land, season 4 might feel quite different when it arrives next month.
Of course, not everything will have changed, as Uhtred will undoubtedly find himself in the think of every battle, palace intrigue and love triangle in the land. We’re also bracing for the return of his wicked uncle Aelfric.
Over the past several months, we’ve talked to plenty of Last Kingdom cast members in anticipation of this big debut, including James Northcote (Aldhelm), Jeppe Beck Laursen (Haesten), Magnus Bruun (Cnut), Timothy Innes (Edward), Adrian Bouchet (Steapa) and Arnas Fedaravicius (Sihtric). Check them out!
Not long now, arselings. Destiny is all!
