4 things the final Wonder Woman movie needs to get right
Diana returns to Themyscira
In Wonder Woman 1984, we only get one sequence on Themyscira, Diana’s homeland. The first 10 minutes of the film are a flashback to when a young Diana participating in an Olympic-like event. It was fun, but we were hoping for a little more Themyscira than we got.
In the first movie, Diana leaves the island to help the world of men during World War I. Hippolyta warns her daughter that she may never return to Themyscira if she goes. While Diana ultimately decides to leave, the reason why she cannot return is never explicitly stated.
Hippolyta tells Diana, “if you leave, you may never return,” not, “if you leave, you cannot return.” Maybe there’s a loophole or exception to the rule that could be exploited if Diana needed to come back to her homeland. Suppose Circe threatens Hippolyta or the Amazons; that gives Diana a pretty good reason to pay mom a visit.
We spent a fair amount of time on Themyscira in the first movie. It felt like a natural extension of the larger DC universe, which could use a couple of familiar locations outside bustling Metropolis and dark and dingy Gotham City. Here’s hoping we get to go back.
