Stranger Things fans have been waiting for what seems like an eternity for the next installment of the series. Unlike other Netflix shows like Virgin River and Outer Banks that churn out new seasons like it’s nothing, the popular sci-fi show has been taking quite a long time put out something new.

We did get confirmation on Stranger Things Day earlier this month that season 4 will be hitting our screens in the summer of 2022, which, of course, is much later than fans were hoping. Now that we have a timeframe, we’re looking for any clues of what to expect from the highly-anticipated new episodes.

Actor Noah Schnapp, who’s played Will Byers since season 1, recently spoke with Showbiz CheatSheet and revealed a surprising tidbit about Stranger Things season 4. When asked about the horror aspect of the new season, the 17-year-old actor suggested that his character isn’t involved in all the danger this time around:

"It is definitely leaning into horror as it always does but it also has some playful aspects too. I get to be part of the less scary storyline this season which was really fun. I’ve never laughed more and had as much fun as I did this season."

Is Stranger Things season 4 scary?

Although there are funny scenes in Stranger Things, we’d hardly call it a comedy, so this quote from Schnapp is pretty interesting — especially when you compare it to what his costars have said about season 4.

Just this month, Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler on the Netflix Original, called season 4 “scary,” adding: “This season is like truly messed up, and it’s going to freak people out a lot.” This echoes previous statements from Wolfhard, who also told Jimmy Fallon while on The Tonight Show that the next installment would be “really messed up.”

Similarly, Sadie Sink, who plays Max Mayfield, said in an interview earlier this year that Stranger Things season 4 is “intense.”

While these claims sound a bit different than what Schnapp is now saying, we assume season 4 might be the first time Will Byers isn’t at the forefront of all the horror. Of course, the show started with him being abducted to the Upside Down, and then he was possessed by the Mind Flayer in season 2, so he deserves a break. Will and his family have relocated to California, meaning he might really be safe…for now.

As the latest Stranger Things season 4 teaser shows, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) will most certainly face some danger, per usual, but perhaps Will is off the hook this time. We’ll have to catch the new season next summer to find out for sure.
