The Last Kingdom season 5

The fifth and final season of The Last Kingdom premiered on Netflix earlier this month and has been staking its claim as one of the streamer’s main attractions. During the show’s March 9 premiere weekend, Uhtred son of Uhtred and the rest of his companions drew in an enormous audience with 63.5 million hours watchedThe Last Kingdom never quite became a widespread phenomenon, but it has legions of fans and they came out in force to support its final lap.

Now, The Last Kingdom announced on its official Twitter account that it was the #1 most-streamed show on Netflix for the week of March 14-20, clocking in at a respectable 48.9 million hours watched. Destiny is all!

Star Alexander Dreymon (Uhtred) weighed in on Instagram:

The Last Kingdom was the #1 show on Netflix the week after its season 5 premiere

It’s great to see The Last Kingdom getting some more recognition. The show has been extremely solid throughout its entire run and deserves all the success and attention it can get. Season 5 wraps up the show in epic fashion and answers many fans’ longstanding questions. Will Uhtred will ever retake Bebbanburg. Will King Edward be the one to fulfill his father Alfred’s dream of a united England? And so on. It doesn’t feel like a stretch to say that the show handled its final episodes in about as satisfying a way as possible.

The high streaming numbers bode well for the upcoming follow-up film Seven Kings Must Die. The sequel movie finished filming last week. No release date has been announced as yet, but you can bet that the executives at Netflix are noting the show’s season 5 success and checking their calendars for how best to capitalize on it.
