12. Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen

We’ve talked about Daenerys and Jon Snow. Now let’s discuss their brother/sister-in-law and father/mother respectively.

This couple has a few things in common with Dany and Jon. Like those two, Lyanna and Rhaegar are honestly attracted to each other, but like those two, they’d be better off not getting together. Lyanna and Rhaegar got married in secret and had a child, but for all the world, it looked like Rhaegar abducted Lyanna out of lust. For that, Robert Baratheon started a war that ended with Dany’s father dead, her exiled across the Narrow Sea, and Jon Snow raised as a bastard at Winterfell, doomed to grow up not knowing who his real parents were. It’s like…it’s nice that you two are in love and everything, but maybe think about other options? Or at least changing your messaging?

At the same time, a doomed romance exerts a powerful gravitational pull on the imagination, and this is a great one.
