From beloved writer Neil Gaiman, fantasy-comedy series Good Omens premiered on Amazon Prime Video and BBC Two in 2019 and has been a big success with both critics and audiences. The series, now two seasons down, is based on the 1990 book of the same name co-written by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, which received several awards and garnered a sizable following. The story’s unique premise, following an angel named Aziraphale and a demon named Crowley with an unconventional friendship, has resonated with readers and viewers worldwide.

Good Omens is known for its sharp and clever humor, character dynamics, and its satire on religion and societal norms. With a fun storyline, great visuals, and an impressive cast, what else could you want in a show? All six episodes of the second season came out on July 28, and it’s gotten even better reviews than the first.

Among the cast of Good Omens is Michael Sheen as Aziraphale and David Tennant as Crowley in the two leading roles, with support from Jon Hamm as Gabriel, a high-ranking angel. Anyone who’s followed Hamm’s career knows how versatile of an actor he is, and he brings a ton of humor and charisma to the character. But as he’s a very well-known actor without too many fantasy titles on his resume, one might wonder how he even got the part in Good Omens.

Neil Gaiman cast Jon Hamm in Good Omens over email

Well, as it turns out, the Mad Men star didn’t even have to audition to land the role of Gabriel. As reported by CBR, Gaiman explained the casting this week while answering a fan on Tumblr. When asked if Hamm had submitted an audition tape, with the fan noting he is “a perfect match” with Sheen and Tennant, the author shared:

"I knew Jon was a Good Omens fan, because he had told me that when he was young it was his favourite book, so I emailed and offered him the part (apologising that it wasn’t in the book)."

What a win for Jon Hamm! I mean, imagine receiving an email asking you to join the cast of an adaptation of a book you loved growing up. Gaiman’s decision turned out to be a win for Good Omens fans as well, as the actor is undoubtedly an awesome part of the series.

At this time, we don’t know if Good Omens season 3 is happening, but Gaiman has ideas ready if there is a renewal. Of course, the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes could have an impact on the series’ future, but the fans definitely want this story to continue.
