House of the Dragon season 3 will see more dragons than ever as the Targaryen civil war heats up. While Daenerys Targaryens’ three dragons were scene stealers in Game of Thrones, the spinoff series has brought in a lot more of the fire-breathing monsters, causing considerable destruction to Westeros. Season 3 of the show will see the war at its peak, and the dragons will be central to many of these battles.
Certainly, each of the dragons is impressive in its own way, but some are sure to stand out in this story more than others. From those dragons whose riders are key characters to the new dragons now entering the fray, these are the ones who we believe will have the biggest impact on House of the Dragon season 3.

1. Syrax
Despite being the dragon of Rhaenyra Targaryen, Syrax hasn’t played a huge role in the war thus far. As things get more intense for the Greens and the Blacks, we can bet that will change. With Rhaenyra making a move on the Iron Throne, that becomes even more likely.
It almost feels like Syrax has been hidden for a purpose in the show, waiting for the right moment to show the dragon’s might. This season could see Rhaenyra become much more battle-minded and put her greatest weapon forward. We can rest assured Rhaenyra will be riding Syrax into King’s Landing when the time comes.

2. Vermax
Another key dragon on the Blacks’ side of the war is Vermax, ridden by Rhaenyra’s eldest son, Jacaerys Velaryon. As a young man, Jacaerys has been itching to get involved with the war and actually become a warrior. This is the season where he will get his wish, for better or worse.
One of the biggest things teased in House of the Dragon season 3 has been the Battle of the Gullet, which is being hyped as one of the biggest battles in the Game of Thrones franchise. While it is a nautical battle, which adds an even more interesting element, there will be some aerial warfare as well from Vermax. The dragon’s presence will only add to the chaos of this highly anticipated sequence.

3. Vhagar
The Blacks have more firepower in terms of the number of dragons at their disposal, but the Greens have the largest and most fearsome dragon in Vhagar. The powerful beast was controversially taken by Aemond Targaryen when he was a young boy, and he has since honed Vhagar into a truly terrifying weapon.
Vhagar has been at the center of some of the biggest moments in the show so far, including bringing about the deaths of key Black allies, including Lucerys and Rhaenys, as well as nearly burning King Aegon II to death. However, she has also proven to be a wild beast that Aemond himself might not have complete control over. Either way, her destruction is sure to continue in season 3.

4. Caraxes
Caraxes is very much like his rider, Daemon Targaryen. He is aggressive, powerful, and mysterious. The bond between the two is also clear, as there are times when it feels like Daemon seeks out Caraxes when he doesn’t have anyone to turn to with his torment. Caraxes may also be the only dragon capable of taking on Vhagar in battle.
Daemon and Aemond have been on a collision course for the entire series, setting up their epic dragon fight showdown. While that might not actually come this season, Caraxes is now back as a loyal and prominent weapon for Rhaenyra and will prove this season that it is a formidable beast to come up against.

5. Sheepstealer
While it was ultimately Aemond who took Vhagar for his dragon, Rhaena was originally set to claim her late mother’s powerful beast. Since that opportunity was taken from her, Rhaena has been dragonless, something that has brought her great shame. It is also something that she is looking to change.
House of the Dragon season 2 saw Rhaena seeking out Sheepstealer, the wild dragon of the Vale. While it remains to be seen if she can actually tame the beast, it would be another powerful weapon for the Greens. It might also be an opportunity for Rhaena to take revenge on Aemond all these years later.

6. Tessarion
Daeron Targaryen has been missing from the show for quite a while as he has presumably been in Oldtown. House of the Dragon season 3 will see Alicent’s youngest son finally stepping forward, along with his dragon Tessarion. Despite being one of the smaller Targaryen dragons, Tessarion will likely be a huge presence in battles.
Nicknamed the Blue Queen, Tessarion will be a visually stunning creature to see imagined in the series. It also feels as though a dragon that is being introduced this late into the series will surely have a big role to play.
House of the Dragon season 3 premieres June 21 on HBO and HBO Max.
