Stories that require child actors often hinge especially strongly on the quality of the casting, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has struck gold by finding Dexter Sol Ansell to play Aegon "Egg" Targaryen. He's not just offered a string of great performances in his own right, but his on-screen chemistry with Peter Claffey has been next level. Still, the heartwarming Game of Thrones prequel may one day be required to find a new actor to play Egg, but showrunner Ira Parker isn't willing to even entertain that scenario.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Parker spoke about how long the show could run, while also discussing how much source material has been made available to him by George R.R. Martin. As it turns out, there is a plan to go beyond the current trilogy of Dunk & Egg novellas that exist, as Martin is working on a fourth, and possibly even fifth, installment. Parker has confirmed that book 5 would be the final novella with "Egg as a boy," which means this would likely be true of a potential season 5. As such, if season 6 happens, it sounds like the show might need to recast Dexter Sol Ansell. Not if the showrunner has anything to say about it.
Ira Parker would rather wait for Dexter Sol Ansell to grow up than recast Egg
"Dexter is our Egg," says Ira Parker. It's a pretty definitive stance. While he goes on to clarify that HBO is actually in charge of the property, it's clear that the showrunner has no interest in replacing either of his two lead actors in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. So, while Parker is leading the show, I think it's fair to say that Dexter Sol Ansell's job is safe.
Rather than choosing an older actor to appear alongside Peter Claffey's Dunk after what sounds like a multi-year time jump, Parker has an alternative in mind. Because book 5 is expected to end the current era of the story, it sounds like it'll serve as a sort of natural stopping point. Then, Parker wants to "take a break and come back when Dexter is older."
Personally, I think this would be the correct move — if HBO would allow such a lengthy hiatus, and not insist on a more immediate continuation with a new Egg actor. House of the Dragon's switch from Milly Alcock to Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra, I think, proves that such recastings can work well, but keeping on stars like Matt Smith as Daemon caused a weird sort of temporal dissonance that's difficult to avoid without overhauling the entire cast after a time jump. Similarly, a new actor playing Egg opposite Peter Claffey would be too weird.
What Parker has in mind reminds me far more of what's possible for The Expanse. The beloved James S.A. Corey adaptation ended with season 6 because of a decades-long time jump from the books that would have made continuing with the same cast difficult. Thankfully, the show's decision to stop short of the final three books suited it really well. Maybe it can return down the line, with the original cast, just as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can potentially take a long break and come back with its core duo intact.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is expected in the first half of 2027.
