Video game adaptations have been seeing a boom these past few years, with massive hits like The Last of Us, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Fallout, The Minecraft Movie, and too many more to list them all. And while there are other exciting ones on the horizon, one that we're especially keen on here at Winter Is Coming is Alex Garland's Elden Ring film, produced by A24 and Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Based on the smash hit game created by FromSoftware, with worldbuilding by A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring is a dark, brooding epic about a shattered world and the dysfunctional group of demigods who lord over it. The movie has been gearing up for production, with videos of sets leaking onto the internet. But now, we have our first big, official announcement: Bandai Namco has revealed the cast list, along with the movie's release date of March 3, 2028.

Elden Ring will star Kit Connor (Warfare, Heartstopper), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Paddington), Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Civil War), Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Black Bag), Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Ruby Cruz (Willow, Bottoms), Nick Offerman (The Last of Us), John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz.

While the roles have not been announced for each actor yet, there's no denying that this cast is absolutely stacked. And beyond just having a bunch of great talent, I love to see several notable names from other big sci-fi and fantasy properties. Nick Offerman may be best known as Ron Swanson from the comedy Parks and Recreation, but the announcement credits him for The Last of Us, and I think it's safe to say he's carved out a solid niche as a drama performer as well.

Two House of the Dragon stars are in the mix: Sonoya Mizuno, who plays Mysaria, and Jefferson Hall, who plays twins Tyland and Jason Lannister. Then there's Jonathan Pryce, who's starred in dozens of major projects over the years, but is well known around these parts for his time on Game of Thrones as the High Sparrow and environmentalist Mike Evans on 3 Body Problem.

Another name I'm thrilled to see here is Cailee Spaeny, who played the breakout lead role in Fede Álvarez's Alien: Romulus. And that's just the ones who leap out at me immediately from my personal viewing taste; just about every name on this list is exciting in their own way.

This is a very promising update for Elden Ring. No plot details have been revealed yet, so we don't know whether it will take place during the events of the game, the extensive lore that serves as a foundation to those events, or somewhere else entirely. Creating a movie based on this vast fantasy world is a daunting proposition, but I'm starting to get well and truly hyped now.

Elden Ring is slated to begin production in Spring 2026.
