Winter is drawing to a close, and soon spring will be in the air. That means it's your last chance to huddle up under a bunch of blankets, brew a piping hot beverage of your choice, and binge watch a new show while the snow falls peacefully outside your window. And fortunately, there are some excellent new fantasy and science fiction shows debuting this month to give you plenty of viewing options!
Pretty much every notable show in the SFF genres that premieres this month is returning for a new season, rather than premiering as a completely new series. So if you know what you like, you'll know which of these you need to mark on your calendar. And if you haven't seen one of them, hey, that just means it's a perfect time to binge through all the previous season to get caught up!
Here are 6 sci-fi and fantasy shows to watch this March!
1. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (Paramount+) — Currently airing
Yes, the new Star Trek series Starfleet Academy is still going strong after premiering all the way back in January — this thing's got legs! Set during a future era of the Trek universe, this show sees the re-opening of the titular Starfleet Academy after a long period of inactivity thanks to a galaxy-wide disaster. It meshes a school coming-of-age drama with the sort of contemplative storytelling that Star Trek has always excelled at, all while bringing in new characters as well as veterans from past series.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy premieres new episodes on Thursdays on Paramount+, up until its season finale on March 12. Check out our ongoing coverage for the series.
2. Outlander season 8 (Starz) — March 6
It's a big month for Outlander fans, because the final droughtlander is over. This month marks the premiere of the eighth and final season of Outlander, Starz's time-traveling romance epic based on the beloved book series by Diana Gabaldon. It's been a long road since World War II nurse Claire Randall was transported back in time through the standing stones at Craigh na Dun to 18th century Scotland, where she met and fell in love with the rugged highlander Jaime Fraser. They've traveled continents, built a family, taken part in numerous wars, and now, at long last, their story gets the moving ending it deserves.
Outlander season 8 premieres Friday, March 6 on Starz, and runs for 10 episodes.
3. One PIece season 2 (Netflix) — March 10
Perhaps the most fun fantasy show coming in March is One Piece, which is coming back for its second season on Netflix. This series is adapted from the long-running manga by Eiichiro Oda and follows aspiring pirate captain Monkey D. Luffy as he leads his Straw Hat crew on a grand adventure to find the legendary One Piece treasure and claim his place as King of the Pirates. The show's first season was the rare manga/anime adaptation that made the jump successfully to live action, preserving the zany spirit of the original story while bringing in a top notch cast and crew to breathe new life into the tale.
Now, Luffy and his pals are heading to the Grand Line. Expect more dangerous adventures, more outrageous anime-style showdowns, and even some truly out there fantasy beings like a talking reindeer and clashing giants. It should be a good time!
All eight episodes of One Piece season 2 premiere March 10 on Netflix.
4. Invincible season 4 (Prime Video) — March 18
The fourth season of Invincible is also hitting screens this month, and the stakes on Prime Video's ultra-violent animated superhero series couldn't be higher. Based on the comics by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a.k.a. the titular Invincible, as he navigates the harsh realities of possessing super powers and contending with his ruthless father, Omni-Man. At least, that's how things began. Now, it's become clearer that there are bigger players than Omni-Man Mark has to worry about; namely, an alien race called the Viltrumites, who are on course to conquer Earth.
Invincible season 4 will see this conflict reach bloody new levels as Mark has to make peace with Omni-Man and enlist new allies in order to stave off the Viltrumite takeover. It'll also see the introduction of series big bad Thragg, leader of the Viltrumites voiced by Foundation star Lee Pace.
Invincible season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Wednesday, March 18 on Prime Video, and airs new episodes weekly for the rest of its eight-episode run until the season finale on April 22.
5. Daredevil: Born Again season 2 (Disney+) — March 22
The other big superhero show hitting screens this month is the second season of Marvel's Daredevil: Born Again. This series is a revival of the popular Netflix Daredevil show starring Charlie Cox as the Man Without Fear and Vincent D'Onofrio as his nemesis, Wilson Fisk a.k.a. the Kingpin. Season 1 contained multiple styles flavors including courtroom drama and superhero subterfuge, until Daredevil once again found himself on a collision course with the "reformed" Fisk, who had been elected mayor of New York City.
It didn't take long for Fisk to fall back into his old habits, creating a secret police force specifically dedicated to taking down vigilantes and twisting the power of the office to his whims. Matt Murdock will need help if he's going to take down his oldest enemy. Now that the show has found its footing, it's going to be thrilling to see where it takes things next.
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premieres Tuesday, March 24 on Disney+, and airs episodes weekly throughout its eight-episode run.
6. For All Mankind season 5 (Apple TV) — March 27
The final show on our list for March is For All Mankind, Apple TV's sweeping sci-fi alternate history saga where the Soviet Union beat the United States to the moon, and the Space Race never stopped. I say alternate history, but at this point, For All Mankind is just about caught up to the modern day. Each season skips ahead a decade, showing how the march of technology and politics has emerged slightly differently from our own timeline thanks to the greater priority on space colonization.
Season 4 saw the race to create settlements in space reach Mars, and now in season 5, we've skipped ahead to 2012, where there's a true conflict over the planet's sovereignty. Can Mars establish itself as a true nation in its own right, independent of Earth? For All Mankind is a stellar sci-fi show, and based on its run so far, it's going to have some fascinating answers to that question.
For All Mankind premieres Friday, March 27 on Apple TV, and airs episodes weekly for the rest of its 10-episode run.
