Over the past year, AMC has launched a bold new chapter for The Walking Dead franchise with a number of spinoffs that detail the further adventures of some of the series' most beloved characters. There was Daryl Dixon, which explored how fan favorite character Daryl (Norman Reedus) got stranded in France. There's this year's The Ones Who Live, which gives fans a long-awaited reunion between Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). And then there was Dead City, which paired up Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and sent them off to a zombie-ridden New York City in order to save Maggie's son from a group of marauders with a shady agenda.
So far, the reception to all these spinoffs has been very positive. Both Daryl Dixon and Dead City have been renewed for second seasons. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol is coming out sometime this summer, hopefully with a slightly abbreviated title. Meanwhile, Dead City is now in production on its second season, which we know because AMC just dropped a fun new behind-the-scenes video that shows both Cohan and Morgan on set:
"NO SLEEP TILL DEAD CITY RETURNS," the video's caption reads. It also confirms that The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2 will air sometime in 2025. So brace for long haul insomnia, if you want to try and stay up that long.
The first season of Dead City saw Maggie and Negan swept up in a brutal turf war in the Big Apple, where horrific new zombies and gangs fought for control of the streets. It also brought back some ties to Negan's former life as one of The Walking Dead's most infamous villains. Hopefully we'll see more of those elements explored in season 2. We've even seen evidence that Negan may reclaim his iconic baseball bat Lucille.
Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment at AMC, weighed in on the renewal for The Walking Dead: Dead City last year, saying, "We can't wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan."
The Walking Dead: Dead City will return sometime next year. Until then, we have The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon — The Book of Carol to tide us over this summer.
