The Witcher season 4 sets more filming locations, including iconic House of the Dragon location

Filming on the fourth season of the Netflix fantasy series is expected to last until October.

Filming continues on the fourth season of The Witcher, the monster-hunting Netflix fantasy show based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski. The Witcher began filming its fourth season back in April 2024, and is expected to wrap sometime in October. With less than two months to go, the show is heading to a few new filming locations in the coming weeks.

Redanian Intelligence, a reliable scoop site for all things The Witcher, reports that their spies have unearthed plans for the series to film in Snowdonia in northern Wales during the weeks of September 16th and 27th. While they have no confirmation about which cast members will be on site for the shoot in Wales, they do know a few locations The Witcher is scheduled to visit, including Llyn Padarn, Zip World, Dolbadarn Castle and the National Slate Museum.

The third season of The Witcher also filmed in Wales, so this could mean we'll get some nice visual consistency between seasons. In particular, several of the outdoor shots which happened during the Thanedd Coup were shot there, including Rience's death and Ciri's confrontation with the Nilfgaardian soldier Cahir.

But The Witcher isn't set up in Wales quite yet. RI also shared some cool footage on their social media of the production gearing up to film at Bourne Woods, in Surrey, England. If you're a regular Winter Is Coming reader that name might ring some bells, because it's the same national park where the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon filmed the spectacular Battle of Rook's Rest. Netflix's The Sandman has also filmed in Bourne Woods this year. It's a popular spot! I'm looking forward to seeing what The Witcher does with it.

The Witcher season 4 and 5 will film almost back-to-back

Expectations are high going into this season of The Witcher, which is the first that will feature Liam Hemsworth in the lead role as Geralt of Rivia instead of Henry Cavill. It's also an important season because it's nearing the end of the series. A while back it was announced that the show will end with season 5, which sounds just about right in terms of covering the entirety of Sapkowski's Witcher Saga.

There have been rumbles for a while that seasons 4 and 5 of The Witcher will film back-to-back, finishing out the story for Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer in one massive swoop. According to RI, this still sounds like it's the case. "Filming for The Witcher Season 4 is set to last until the end of October 2024 with the production for Season 5 following not long after," they write.

The Witcher season 4 is expected to premiere sometime in 2025, two years after season 3 dropped in 2023. With any luck, maybe the back-to-back filming schedule will mean we won't have to wait quite that long for the final season.

In the meantime, a new Witcher anime film, The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, is expected to drop on Netflix later this year. With the streamer's Geeked Week celebration set for next week, we'll probably be hearing more about Sirens of the Deep soon. It's based on Sapkowski's short story "A Little Sacrifice," which chronicles Geralt's encounter with a civilization of mer-people during the early days of his monster-hunting career. Doug Cockle, the voice actor who plays Geralt in the popular Witcher video games, will reprise the role in the anime.

And if even that's not enough Witcher for you, author Andrzej Sapkowski has finished writing a new Witcher book as well. That's expected to release in Winter 2024/2025.
