Sigourney Weaver already has a glut of iconic franchises in her esteemed filmography. From Alien, to Ghostbusters, to James Cameron's Avatar — she's played key roles in some of the most beloved geeky movies ever. The big roles keep on coming, with 2026 seeing her join Star Wars in The Mandalorian and Grogu.
Moreover, according to recent reports, Weaver is eyeing a role in Prime Video's upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, starring Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner in the titular role. The report of Weaver's involvement in the upcoming series comes from Deadline, although they stress that Prime Video has not yet commented on the news. Additionally, there's no word on who she would be playing.
From Amazon MGM Studios, Tomb Raider has Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress and producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge attached as writer and executive producer. Chad Hodge is also attached to the project, along with director Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun, Dope Thief).
When Sophie Turner was announced as Lara Croft, the former Game of Thrones actress expressed her delight in tackling such a high-profile role. She declared herself "thrilled beyond measure" to be taking on the part. "She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many - and I am giving everything I've got."

Of course, she's taking a role that's had big names attached to it over the years, not least Angelina Jolie. "They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands," Turner said when her involvement was announced in September 2025.
The Tomb Raider franchise has had a mixed reception in film and television over the years. The hero was originally played by Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and the sequel Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). The franchise was later rebooted in 2018 with Alicia Vikander as the star. Netflix made an animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft in 2024, with the series recently returning for its second and final season.
To say Tomb Raider films and shows have been divisive over the years would be an understatement. Will Sophie Turners prove a high point for the franchise? We sure hope so. The series is poised to begin filming in January 2026, with a release date estimated for sometime in 2027 or 2028.
In the meantime, Sigourney Weaver can currently be seen in Avatar: Fire and Ash, which releases in theaters on December 19.
