Months before the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3, a new report gives us hope for the future of the Prime Video series. No, the prequel has not officially been renewed for a fourth season yet, but the crew is getting to work on it nonetheless.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, development on The Rings of Power season 4 has begun, with preproduction eyed to begin this fall and filming to start in early 2027. This is, of course, great news for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, especially as wait times between seasons for big budget fantasy/sci-fi shows seem to be getting longer and longer these days.
Prime Video looks to still be following the five-season plan for The Rings of Power

THR speculates the fourth season would likely come out in 2028, which seems reasonable. Prime Video needs to officially green-light the show for another installment, but it will be no surprise when they do. The streamer has reportedly committed to a five-season plan, and it looks like they’ll likely be sticking with it.
The Rings of Power premiered on Prime Video in 2022, serving as a prequel to the events of The Lord of the Rings, taking place thousands of years prior. It is adapted from Tolkien’s appendices, background information and additional lore on the history of Middle-earth. Though the two seasons so far have been met with backlash from diehard Tolkien fans, it’s received good reviews from critics. And despite viewership reportedly declining in the second season, it’s remained one of Prime Video’s most popular shows.
With as large of an IP as The Lord of the Rings, it’s not surprising Prime Video has continued to go all in on The Rings of Power—even if it’s, unfortunately, at the cost of other big-budget fantasy shows. Fans are still reeling over the streamer’s cancellation of The Wheel of Time, its other sprawling fantasy series based on a beloved book series. The show was canceled after three seasons a year ago, and many question if they chose the right one to axe.
But, of course, there is a passionate fanbase for The Rings of Power (and we’re part of it!) who are incredibly excited to hear the show will likely continue past season 3. But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves yet; we still have the third season to enjoy later this year. Along with the announcement of the release date at the Upfronts earlier this month, we also got a tease of what to expect from the third season:
"Jumping forward several years from the events of season two, season three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 premieres on Prime Video on Nov. 11, 2026. Check back with us at Winter Is Coming for the latest news on all things Middle-earth.
