The two biggest fantasy TV shows are officially in post-production on their new seasons. Just after the cast and crew wrapped filming on House of the Dragon season 3, the cast and crew of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 did the same around the end of October 2025.
Recently, new pictures from the cast and crew were shared on social media revealing production on Rings of Power season 3 had been completed. We knew this spring, when production started, that the fall 2025 was being eyed as the time of year The Rings of Power season 3 should wrap, so it's good news that they were able to stay on schedule or close to it.
After the epic season 2 finale, I think fans are ready to see the next step in the War for Middle-earth and Sauron's reign in season 3. Of course, Morfydd Clark, Charlie Vickers, Robert Aramayo, Benjamin Walker, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Markella Kavenagh, Maxim Baldry, Lloyd Owen, and Daniel Weyman will be back for season 3.
While it's awesome news that production has officially wrapped, it's not all good news for the release date of the new season.
The Rings of Power season 3 isn't coming to Prime Video anytime soon
While House of the Dragon season 3 is going to crash land on HBO and HBO Max like Meleys at Rook's Rest in the late spring or early summer of 2026, it's going to be a much longer wait for The Rings of Power season 3.
Prime Video has not shared much information regarding the release date of the new season, but we all know, with production ending this late in the year, it's going to be a long time between seasons. Prime Video does not and will not rush out a season of The Rings of Power. We're expecting the seasons to be released every two years, basically. With the second season's release in the late summer or early fall of 2024, it's going to be at least that long for Rings of Power season 3 in 2026.
The other thing to note is that it's not just going to be about Rings of Power season 3. Even if the creative team puts all the finishing touches on the new episodes soon, I don't think we're going to see the new season just rolled out. This is one of Prime Video's three most popular shows, and the network has its biggest show coming back for its final season before Rings of Power season 3. Of course, I'm talking about The Boys season 5.
That season is expected to arrive in the late spring or early summer with weekly episodes. I don't think Prime Video is going to roll both of these seasons out back to back, so I'm guessing The Boys season 5 will push The Rings of Power season 3 back a bit. The network could even hold the series for spring 2027 if there are other big titles in the mix, as well.
So, that's the bad news about the series. Hopefully, we don't have to wait that long, but it will be nice that we don't have House of the Dragon and Rings of Power competing for our attention at the same time. Without The Wheel of Time, we need to keep these fantasy shows spread out to make sure they all get the maximum love they deserve from fans.
