The first half of Wednesday season 2 was released on Netflix in August 2025, and fans are still talking about everything that went down in the first four episodes. On Sept. 3, viewers will be taken back to Nevermore Academy to wrap up the season. While plot details about the last four episodes remain under wraps, the part 2 trailer teases much more drama for Wednesday going forward. Will she finally take down Tyler/The Hyde for good and save Enid from her impending fate? We'll have to tune in to find out!
But while we wait for Wednesday season 2 part 2 to drop on Netflix, we're already looking ahead to the third season. In July 2025, Netflix announced the season 3 renewal of the hit fantasy series. But besides the announcement, nothing else was revealed about the upcoming installment. Well, that's until now.
Before Wednesday season 2 part 1's release, Collider had the opportunity to speak with creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar about the second season. During the conversation, Gough and Millar also offered the first real insight into Wednesday season 3. Just as a heads up, it wasn't the best news that fans were hoping for.

Wednesday season 3 is in the writers' room
This is probably the best news that Gough and Millar mentioned in the interview. When asked by Collider how far along they are in writing the scripts for season 3, Gough stated that they are already working in the writers’ room. In other words, they’ve started developing the story and scripts for the third season.
However, Gough also mentioned that they paused writing temporarily to focus on launching season 2. Now that the first half of the second season is out, it's likely that they were able to return full-time to crafting season 3. Well, at least until the second and final part of season 2 comes out. Then, they'll most likely shift some of their attention back to promoting and managing the release of part 2.
"We're actually in the writers' room for Season 3. So we're down the road a bit in the writers' room. But now we've, of course, stopped to launch Season 2."
The third season will consist of eight episodes
So, we lied. There’s a bit more good news, though I doubt it will come as much of a surprise. According to Gough and Millar, Wednesday season 3 will have a total of eight episodes. This shouldn't be shocking, given that the first and second seasons consisted of eight episodes each. Netflix doesn't typically change its episode count for its shows as the seasons go by, especially when the existing format has proven successful.
Sometimes this happens when a show’s story demands it or the creators want to explore a bigger narrative, but for Wednesday, the eight-episode format seems to have worked perfectly. Now it's unclear if the streaming giant will choose to split the new season into parts like it did with the second season. But we could see Netflix following the same approach if it worked in its favor.
Wednesday season 3 could be released in 2027
Here's when we get to the unfortunate news. Fans were frustrated about the long gap between season 1 and season 2, which took three years. Gough and Millar acknowledge this frustration in the interview and explain that it was due to factors like the writers’ strike and changing filming locations from Romania to Ireland. They also mentioned how the episodes are like "movie-scale productions," so they take longer to finish.
However, they also agree with fans and would like to get more episodes out quicker. Ideally, they would like to release a new season faster, but due to production complexity, they stated the minimum realistic turnaround is about 18 months between seasons. That's a year and a half. While this is a shorter gap than the three-year wait between seasons 1 and 2, it still means fans will need to be patient.
During the interview, Collider mentioned that they had heard filming on season 3 would start later in 2025. The news outlet then told Gough and Millar that if production really begins later this year, that would probably mean fans wouldn’t see Wednesday season 3 until 2027. Gough and Millar didn’t disagree and even stated that a 2027 release would be "ideal."
However, we just recently learned of a rumor going around that production has been pushed to Q2 2026. This would mean that the cameras wouldn't start shooting until sometime between April and June 2026. If this actually ends up happening, then a 2027 release would pretty much be off the table. We'd likely be looking at a 2028 release at the earliest. This is just a rumor as of right now, but it's still something to keep an eye on.
Stay tuned to Winter is Coming as we'll continue to keep you updated on all things Wednesday.
